Great morning on the Jersey shore. We used to fish the night shift. Always keep your lure bag with you. Herring will be showing up a little later this month. I used to hook up at Sandy Hook into Christmas. Thanks...Made me twitch.

Thanks for the comment. Had to do some budgeting this year but f have a feeling Santa might bring me a better plug bag this year.

@@MidAtlanticOutdoorsman Some of those plug bags are rather pricey. None the less, you had to run up the beach to grab a different lure. FJ Neil makes some decent bags, the medium, 10 tube bag is about $50.00 and a smaller 3 tube bag around $38.00. I'm in Florida now, I keep plugs and spoons in the 3 tube bag. The soft baits are in silicone pouches in my pockets. Thanks again, keep up the good surf fishing.

I was actually looking at the 3 plug bag today. Forget which company but a reasonable $45

Tackle Direct has the medium bag for $29.99 That's a great price for the medium bag. FJ Neil Surf Rite Plug Bag - Medium I agree with some of the other comments, put together a surf belt that will hold your pliers securely, small knife in a sheath, attach each with a coil lanyard. Keep On Fishin''

Congratulations on the great surf action with the stripers and thanks for sharing the video! Respectfully, you need to be a lot faster with your releases and keep them out of the sand if you want them to survive. I recommend a belt with tools (pliers, lip grippers) and mark lengths or attach a rule to your rod for quick measurement. Tight lines.

Hey Tom thanks for the comment and glad you enjoyed the video! I definitely need to be quicker but I’d also tried my best. Fish grippers and a mark on the rod is a great idea. I didn’t take any photos of the 40”er despite it being my best just to get her back as quickly as possible. You probably noticed they all kicked off right away and required zero reviving.

You can hold a fish out of water for a pretty long time especially when the water is colder. That being said when you do hold them out of the water at least revive them for a minute or so and make sure the fish is fully recovered. I hate when people are so concerned with getting back to the action they just throw the fish back without reviving the fish at all.

I definitely would have revived the fish if any of them needed it, but as you can see in the video they all kick off right away with no trouble.

It may have out of the water for 60 seconds which i doubt but you also fought it for five minutes definitely needed reviving if someone wrestled you for five minutes and then held your head underwater for 60 seconds I think you would need reviving, release mortality usually occurs hours or days later.

@ your being alil dramatic bud. I’ve been fishing over 30 years and have never heard that a fish will die days later because it wasn’t revived on release. You can tell when a fish needs to be revived because it will go belly up. I agree that it isn’t smart to just throw the fish back without reviving it for a minute or some but when it kicks off while you’re holding it upright that usually means it’s ready to go.

Congratulations - nice catches!.. A suggestion - keep your gear (pliers, tape, fish grip) on your belt or plug bag so you can de-hook and measure beside the surf, get the fish on its way quickly and get fishing again…if you really must have a fish out of water for significant time (e.g. problems de-hooking), swim the fish until you feel it is strong and kicks off. Also, if you’re keeping fish, I’d suggest bleeding it pretty immediately - doesn’t take much time and it will taste better.. Not trying to be critical, just trying to help.. we’ve had a great Fall run this year but the Atlantic striped bass fishery is actually not in good shape - we all need to look after these great fish..

Thanks for the comment! Definitely will work on a quicker release! All these fish went back in under a minute. Might be hard to tell from the video but they all kicked off great without needing any revival.

Fish were out of the water less than 60 seconds. Needed zero revival as they kicked off immediately. I definitely will be marking my rod for next year to make it even quicker though!

@@MidAtlanticOutdoorsmanlol, 60 seconds means fish has less than 50% survival rate plus add in all the soft sand in its gills.

You mention about diagonal casting in your video. Some people that aren't experienced surf fisherman or not fisherman at all might not understand is that in your situation you are correct. With mild sea conditions, and you are in close proximity with other anglers the proper thing to do is cast forward. With larger seas and stronger winds causing a side to side sweep or current along the beach a diagonal cast is the proper way to effectively fish.

You hit the nail on the head. I didn’t give this guy a hard time, accidents happen. He was certainly experienced and apologized later. Jersey surf fish can be chaotic with all the people and it’s easy to get caught up in the moment when the fish are blitzing. Thanks for the comment!
