In Week 9 of our 14-week Striper Migration Report series, OTW's Assistant Editor Matt Haeffner catches up with surfcaster and OTW Contributor Steve Gallant on the status of the migration on Massachusetts' North Shore. Then, we check in with owner of Red Top Sporting Goods, AJ Coots, to discuss the status of the migration in and around the Cape Cod Canal. Matt and Steve talk about the importance of herring in the estuaries north of Boston, how to present a big bait to stripers in the rivers and salt marshes, and when to transition from fishing the backwaters to the ocean front. Then, AJ and Matt break down the current class of fish from Buzzards Bay to Cape Cod Bay, the array of forage in the Cape Cod Canal, and what to expect in terms of fish movement on the back end of the May full moon.
This week, cow stripers remained stationed off of northern New Jersey as schoolie stripers began dropping out of the Hudson River, slot-class fish invaded the waters from Cape Cod Bay to Boston, and 20- to 40-pound bass span from Long Island to the south coast of Massachusetts.
