Thank you for this wonderful tutorial! A few months ago I was NJ’ing and came upon a family of Nuttall’s. Too difficult to sketch on site, except for the juvenile peeking its head out of a cavity. This really has helped, thanks so much for talking about the feather groups. You are a fantastic artist and teacher. So grateful for your videos!

Female is more IMPRESSED mainly by the CREST. and if he displays more aggression if another male appears. Like if one looks at a BLUE JAY , you will notice none are alike. SPOTS is more of a Camouflage. Possible her question in certain LIGHTING a female may be more impressed, if the male's spots, appear larger in the moonlight , or disappear in the dark . CHILDREN, great , OWEN GROMME taught me, HE would catch me Skipping school at age 10. He taught me how to SEE things others MISSED. Unknown to me I was DYSLEXIC, 365 days a year, even before school started, First words I learned was STUPIED, and Dumb. Then in school teachers used kids like me as EXAMPLES of what NOT TO Do. Another reason. now in my late 70's making my pay back, for what OWEN GROMME taught me. So glad you are reaching out to Children also. TO SEE. to learn, about much in life so many take advantage of as insignificant. IN the way of PROGRESS, to PRODUCE more of "STUFF" more JOBS. So much in what I paint I try to capture things besides the birds, animals, but plants, like Stinging NETTLE. and how important that plant is TO US . I is more nutritious than an Orange.

Have to return to your Pod Cast on Stripy Woodpeckers., I am trying tp capture all 344 birds seen in my state and the occasional accidentals. Not always easy. & min. tops for the lighting., but birds so not Stay the 7 min. Knowing the bird, I map out it's basic shape , home in on the intense colour, or pattern Right now, first off spring left the nests or about to. Which means parents may stay in place a bit longer. I have bird books but a bit Flat in color. I am on a shoe string budget, so my canvas are mostly 11X14" I have the book you are looking at, several latter and earlier., and LUCKY to get a Larger hard cover book. My paintings. I may not get all the bars. visible , due to shadows, and lighting, capturing in their more natural habitat. Enjoying as you move about, What Blue Pencil are you using? I am working on the RED headed woodpecker. Pair. and to add the juv. which they LOOK NOTHING LIKE THEIR PARENTS. I like THE FACT you are more concentrating on the Bird Anatomy.. I sometimes find I can do the birds, but the environment, when coming to the leaves. harder as O try tp keep the light and shadows correct. Too often doing field sketching. the bird does not stay in the same place, same perch. Colors on the bird change., but I am trying to Keep Majority of the birds anatomy still visible. Owen GROMME taught me most of what I know, but being female, art has been always discouraged, and female artist get over looked in art books doing Realism NATURE, Because most art critics consider Realism in Nature not REAL ART. THE state I live in is big on filling up the lake front gallery with Abstract, and big critics that one can take a picture of a bird, or refused OWEN GROMME'S art that he had to use the Museum to show his work. AT 76, I am trying to honor OWEN. Ever ROBERT Batman admired his work before Robert Bateman became more Famous. I met Bateman , by accident in the 70's while sketching some birds, And he Liked my work then, I Mentioned OWEN GROMME to him, and he knew whom I was talking about,. Not knowing who Bateman was, and it was the park he decided to donate to Toronto, which I discovered later. in a BOOK of HIS and there was OWEN GROMME AND TORY PETTERSON. I have to make my own transfer paper, save on cost. Your basic Shape of your woodpecker, is a great make out where detail will fall into place later. My eraser gets dirty , but I do wash it, and kneed back into place. I work in acrylic after I sand ,and prime my Flat board with Rust-Oleum Flat White, sand between, then the acrylic. Later after I give it a clear coat. I will add, "BLUE RIDGE " oil paints. Too bad one has to belong to A GULD, or have to pay such a HIGH Hidden costs to enter. or have to belong to a group, paying BI yearly 300 hundred some free, that is way past my budget. I do NOT SMOKE , Drink , Party. I am able to go to the Museum and check out the DRAWERS of the different species of Birds, up close. NOT sure if you do this ? BEST GET BACK TO MY PAINTING OF The Painted Bunting Pair. In my state they are an accidental bird, until bad weather pushes them farther north, like in a Hurricane. Last year we were surprise by Seven Flamingos. That was a great sight to enjoy, until the full Moon helped to navigate them into the direction they needed to go.
