Strip panel naked is one of the best channels in YT. The collection of videos analyzing pieces of the comic book media is just incredible, definitely made me more passionate about comics and the effort that creators go into making it! Also, take a look at Black Bolt by Saladin Ahmed and Christian Ward. It won the Eisner for best new series, it is my favorite Marvel comic since Vision.

When you were talking about the panels getting bigger as the dog runs, around the 5:25 mark, you talk about how simple it is of an effect. But this is Frank Quitely. He doesn’t do simple. Panel 1 and 2 aren’t even the same drawing. They are drawn to emulate a camera pan. The angle of the parked truck changes and the water puddle doesn’t fit the square in the same way. This is cinema. This is masterful.

One important point I think you haven't stressed enough is simultainety: the last splash aims at portraying a lot of things happening almost at the same moment in detail. That's probably the most interesting thing it achieves. Also, I'd disagree that it's an action movie translated to comics. If anything, these pages show a lot of things you can do with comics that you'll never be able to do in other media.

What I meant by an action movie in comics is We3 visually is a series of big set pieces, typically the same construction you'd see in an action movie. Many of it's biggest moments are pure stunts. Obviously it does things only comics can do, but I thought it was a fair comparison point in terms of structure. And yeah for sure, but I don't necessarily think it's doing that more that any other comic page does, but just in it's own very unique way. It's still taking the core elements of sequential panels and sticking them next to each other, but it almost works as a series of inset panels. The narrative is still left to right top to bottom, I'd say (to its benefit.)

Another interesting thing about the last page you looked at is depending on how you “read” it, the entire page can play in your mind like a loud, hyper fast montage of Aronofsky quick cuts OR you can look at each little box like slow motion close ups with minimalist sound FX.

Thanks for the video! I think the lack of movement and sound in comics is also his strengh! The many creative ways in which this medium can compensate that lack make it so versatile and lean to experimentations..maybe I'm wrong but for me comics have more room for creativity than any other medium! sorry for my bad english:)

Insightful analysis but it misses on one kinda major thing--the panel(s) shown at 6:40 is constructed like a timeline, stacking events that happen simultaneously. So the soldier is lifting his foot off the pedal just as the bullet is about to hit his face (or actually he lifts his foot a little before the bullet hits...That's the cool thing about this layout). Think of a playhead moving from left to right. I'm sure this is exactly what the artist had in mind.

I would be interested to know how much Morrison influenced the story telling of Quitely in We3, the reason I mention that is because Quitely was doing this kind of incredible story telling before he worked with Morrison. Things like Blackheart (by far one of my favourite Quitely stories and why I am always dissapointed when he doesn't ink his own work) has equally impressive stuff, even going as far back as his work in 2000AD on things like Missionary Man and Shimura... Anyway, either way, he's definitely one of my favourite artists out there. i know I know... I said I wouldn't comment anymore... I can't help myself, this stuff is too good.

In the top page of the last splash page the panels that are closer makes you feel like time is moving faster, in the other half of the page the panels are all clustered together to make you feel how fast everything is happening. i love your obvervations, i have learned a great deal with them, i would love to get in contact with you to show you some comics i think you are going to love. One of then is "Invincible - Justice and Fresh Vegetables", once you chek it out you´ll know what i mean, keep up the good work

Great video but i wonder how involved Morrison was in these choices. Did he put these things in the script, did he talk to quietly about it or was it all just quietly?

I can only speculate, but I believe Morrison at least had a hand in it. Portraying 2D images in a 3D space is something which, both in a visual sense and as a narrative theme, reappears in a number of Morrison's stories. So I think it's just something Morrison likes to use. Of course, when you've got a fantastic artist like Quitely doing the actual art that just takes it to the next level.

In Morrison's New X-Men run he revealed that the X in weapon X program was just a number and one of the earlier programs was on animals, so we3 is actually likely Weapon III
