Ok, so I have these two tree stumps that are now a year old and that I want to debark. Any idea on how I can do that now after a year? I think it's a poplar tree BTW.

Could you stain the wood right after OR does it have to dry out first?

If I’m just gonna use it as a post should I bother stripping the bark?

So once I strip the bark how long do I wait to add a stain and sealer?
@TimberKraft5 жыл бұрын
You have to wait till the log is dry which can vary greatly, I used to use a moisture meter to tell me the exact moisture content of the logs in the shop but pretty much you are good after a couple weeks. Alot of times you will pick up a log and think to yourself wow that is light after it has sat for a bit.

Cedar peels easy when it is cut in the spring and very early summer. The problem is when it is wet with sap the moisture will attract bugs and the wood will not last as long. Cedar should be cut in the winter to maximize resistance to bugs and rot. Unfortunately winter bark sticks on pretty good.

BUT HOW DO I REMOVE IT IN THE WINTER LOL I’ve been trying to put a space heater to warm it back up but that hardly works lol

how long would you wait for it to dry before using in furniture, benches or stools for example?
@TimberKraft4 жыл бұрын
it all depends on the conditions in which it is placed after stripping, If left in a nice dry environment with ample airflow then generally 1-3 weeks on average and it will be ready to use. I stored my stripped logs in a climate controlled building with a dehumidifier running 24/7 and it took about a week for that.

HomeDIY I cut mine from a swamp in the winter so late spring should be plenty of time. Thanks for the info!

BRAVO! I Just figure this out an hour ago...did you use a rounded tip putty knife or a square tip one?
@TimberKraft5 жыл бұрын
The one I always used was square

I made the mistake of cutting about 30 white cedars from my land in the U.p. Michigan, then brought them home to peel about a year later, it is very difficult to de bark after they sit awhile, also I was wondering if the bark comes off even easier in the spring?

I have some logs that have been sitting for almost a year - good to know out will be more of a challenge!
