I strip and wax a lot of lab spaces, and they always set things like steel gas bottles and cabinets directly on the floor, leading to rust stains. If they're all the way down in the tile I've had good luck with mild acid cleaners, even just vinegar, and hand scrubbing with a hi-pro pad center. I've also seen good results from doing a post-stripping scrub with a surface prep pad and plain water, both for rust and for other stains and chair damage etc. A 175 is fine for that, you don't need a square/orbital machine. You have to do a follow-up rinse before waxing though, you'll be essentially sanding a small amount of tile material from the surface which will otherwise leave a powdery residue. If there's a lot of wear to the tile surface I like to use a sealer before waxing, even if the wax is self-sealing. It'll save a lot of wax in those areas, as it will keep the worn tiles from soaking so much of it down into them, and the final result looks better and lasts longer. I stick with acrylic surface sealers that are compatible with normal stripper, so I don't cause trouble for the next strip and wax.

How about removing marks from rubber wheels that leach into the vct.? Once a year I scrub and wax a showroom floor that has lawn equipment like riding lawn mowers on it. Once they clear the floor you can see all the tire tread marks where the rubber wheels sat on the vct.
