7:55 I applaud the way you simply accepted the reality of the strip breaking at the joint and simply showed us how to fix the situation. Well done. Thanks for sharing.

Mistakes happen. Getting good at something is as much about learning how to fix mistakes as learning to avoid them.

Hey Mr. Schade, what did you have for Lunch? If that makes you build boats like this, I want the same :)

Glad you're back Nick. Personally, I'm a big fan of voice overs. Gives the maker a chance to make a more concise, thought out description rather than repetitive ramblings while trying to focus on 2 things at once.
@NickSchade
@NickSchade 4 жыл бұрын
I agree that I would probably be able to be a lot more concise if I were doing voiceover, but strictly from the logistics of getting videos completed and posted, voiceover takes a lot more time that at this point I can not justify the extra time. I'm just a one man show here, trying to design and build boats, selling plans, teach classes, working on my website, etc, I just don't have the time to do everything the way I would really like to do it.

@@NickSchade I understand that, my point was there's absolutely no need to apologize for it, which is what it sounded like you were doing. My comment about the repetitive ramblings was not aimed at you, I've never felt you did that. It was just a general statement pertaining to a few other channels I've been watching lately.

Hi there, do you use any glue between the cove and the bead? Thank you

I'm still working up to choosing my first build. I see how much quicker the Petrel is than the Bootlegger due to the stapling of cove n bead as opposed to gluing chamfered strips. But... why don't the staples drive fully home? Sitting proud makes them easier to remove obviously, but I don't know why. Thanks Nick

You're right about that, it makes removing staples easier. Also it doesn't leave marks on the wood :)

You may have mentioned it but I'm very curious as to your impression of the 3/16 cove and bead?

Quick question, I am building a sup, this is my 2nd one, but it is a different layout/construction than my 1st. On my 1st, I used cove and bead on the rockers, and flat panels on the top/bottom decks. On my 2nd one, it has a number of shape changes on the top/bottom where I think cove and bead might work better on the deck then straight edge joints. When you sand/fair the strips, would the widths of the strips look funny, depending on sanding thicknesses, ect? I know it might be hard to picture what I mean. Thanks for any input.

Nick - I'm thinking the effort initially to bead and cove all the strips is a big time saver when it comes to putting the strips on the kayak? Your other build seemed to take a lot more effort when beveling each strip, even with your robo bevel?
@NickSchade
@NickSchade 4 жыл бұрын
Cove and bead does save time over hand beveling. The reason to hand bevel is tighter joints.

Curious as to your choice of table saw blade. My saw came with a 40T combination blade. I cut some 1/2” hardwood plywood for a shop project and it splintered fairly bad. I have since bought an 80T blade for my next plywood project. Your blade looks to be in the 24T or maybe 30T range. I am surprised this gives good cuts on the thin stock you use, but maybe the wood specie makes the different. Curious as to your experience in this regard.
@NickSchade
@NickSchade 4 жыл бұрын
I use the Freud Diablo 7.5” blade with 24 teeth because it has a very thin kerf, thus minimizing the waste of wood. It produces a very nice cut on cedar, but honestly, I don’t need a super smooth cut as the whole surface will eventually get well sanded.
@PapiSmerf
@PapiSmerf 4 жыл бұрын
@@NickSchade I believe they make a 40t blade with the same kerf. As you said you don't need a cleaner cut, but I think it would make for less splinters in the shop. Your off-cuts seem to get chewed up pretty good when you're working with strips. Can I just say something?.... I've realized that I need to up the dust collection in my shop after seeing your nose-hair in the beginning of the video. If I worked in my shop regularly with that kind of growth I'd asphyxiate.
@NickSchade
@NickSchade 4 жыл бұрын
Geno Merci I have used the 40T version. It didn’t make enough difference to be worth the added cost. My nose hair was getting a bit out of control there. The fact I had a cold didn’t help matters. But as you say, it does make a good filter

bubby are you using a cad to plan out your forms?
@NickSchade
@NickSchade 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, I start with a 3D CAD model and then slice that at the form locations. I bring those sections into another CAD package and add reference lines.
