Take my advice as someone who has a eaton 10 speed in a truck, take the top cover off and put a new seal kit in range piston. Mine will leak air sometimes bad when it gets any cold temps and eventually will fail so much easier to do outside than in the truck. The seal kit is very cheap on the bad end you may need to replace the top cover if it has pitted the cover. This is assuming your eaton is the same as mine or similar. You can also buy a clutch housing that is made for a hudraulic slave cylinder and makes doing the linkages etc much easier because you can have a hydraulic shop make you a hose to run from your slave cyl and the master cyl.
@STROKER-GARAGE2 ай бұрын
Thank you for the advice! I will look into it
@TheHondaOutlaw2 ай бұрын
@@STROKER-GARAGE if you do go the hydraulic route and don't use the original mechanical linkage be sure and buy a heavy duty clutch master because these semi clutch kits are quite stout and I highly doubt the OEM Ford can handle them.

Good project. Have experience with these in turbo marine form. They are very responsive to timing. Run a few degrees extra advance. Make yourself a high pressure hose with injector coupling nuts. These engines can crack the injector lines. Once one cracks you go nowhere. Put the hose on and it'll drive home on 7 cylinders. The hose will flex and you won't get injection on that cylinder, but you will get home. High idle is how you set governed RPM. Raise it a few 100 rpm and then figure your boost. Anything above about 25 psi boost and the head gaskets will weep. The 300+ HP marine engines use oil cooled pistons. Since you don't have oil cooled pistons, instead of lots of fuel and high piston temps at lower speeds, wind it a bit more and get the HP with RPM. These engines are tough. The lower end will take the RPM 😊
@FordGTmaniac2 ай бұрын
For the twin turbos, try looking into using dual volute turbos rather than normal ones. They give better throttle response and can make more power than an equivalent normal turbo of the same size, for the cost of a slightly more complex exhaust setup. I'm not too sure if anyone makes them big enough for an engine like this, though, a pair of custom one-off dual volute turbos sounds really cool but probably expensive.
@CountryMileGarage2 ай бұрын
At your transmission output shaft just make a flat flange so you can bolt your SD drive shaft to. Look into SD Cummins swaps you can use an aftermarket hydraulic pump for your power steering (I have one on mine and it works awesome) Go with a 03-07 truck I feel the front axle setup is a little better vs the 7.3s. I'll be following this build ... good luck

@@STROKER-GARAGE, install stronger axles ASAP. 2.5 ton Rockwells with modern internals and 8 lug disk brake conversion would be good. Also, you can get a sleeve kit for the 3208, ignore the "disposable" nonsense, they can indeed be resleeved. Also, if you put the money into it, these engines can make great power numbers.

Im in the process of putting an eaton behind a cummins. My solution for the transfer case was to find a 205 from a ford, center mount it in the truck, make up 2 equal length output shafts for sake of possibly blowing them up and needing a spare. And since its a divorced case, just make an input shaft that converts to the output of the eaton.

The easy way to do your driveshaft is get a shaft yoke and machine it down to the diameter of your driveshaft, might even be able to use a slip yoke that fits that series of u-joint if the od of the yoke is close to the tube id. I remember back in the 80's when the diesels were just coming out in pickups seeing a magazine article featuring a Chev one ton dually where someone replaced the 6.2 with a 3208. can't remember what transmission they ran though. You can definately make some horses with them as I've seen a few guys running them in pulling tractors running twin turbos.

“Throwaway” just like the engine that’s already in most pickup trucks…? The idea is an oversized engine never has to work too hard and will last longer.

@ throw away as in it doesn’t have cylinder liners. So it can’t be in framed. If you have to pull the engine to rebuild it, then may as well throw it away. Then install a new one. That’s where the term came from.

Yes. But this is exactly like every other light duty diesel on the road so I’m not that concerned.

When you state Super Duty what are you referring to? Ford has used the Super Duty nomenclature off and on since 1958. Even the OBS body style F-450 (1-1/4 ton) was not called a F-450 but a Super Duty available as a cab chassis only.

There is a guy on KZbin who did a 10 speed swap on his channel with all the parts that anyone would need to check him out, but that being said go air over hydraulic clutch slave cyclider its pretty simple and easy to convert to any applications.

So one told me that some of the later years 3208. Have the Preston oil coolers Like the turbo option has and the first 3208 no turbo don’t have them so putting a turbo on might over heat the Prestons just something to look in to look like a fun project

Just a bit advise, if you’re going to all the labor find a turbocharger engine. It is a night and day difference!

If this is done, you'll be the third (widely) known person to have done it. The second was Deboss Garage. The first was an old man with a early/mid 90's chevy 3500HD regular cab which can be found online including youtube and a few major magazines. Its also appeared at a few shows. I personally wouldn't use a 3408. They were plagued with problems and and cat parts are expensive.

Get a 350 or 450 with a junk gas engine to throw away for the swap

I saw one installed in a one ton chevy 4x4. Those are heavy engines. I wonder what the weight difference is between a 3208 and a 454.
@STROKER-GARAGE2 ай бұрын
The 3208 is almost 1000 lbs heavier

Interesting, I have a 1998 k3500 non dually with the 454, would be a fun swap, but 1000 lbs heavier is crazy 😮

Sorry to break it to you , but as an Ex -Cat mechanic for over 20 years you will NEVER get any 3208 to make “ A thousand horsepower “ and live . Those old naturally aspirated ones came factory rated at between 175- to 210 hp if my memory is correct . The last generation Turbo models for over the road use were rated at 225 to 250 hp max . The marine application could get 350 hp with intercoolers for oil & air intake to get them to survive with a bit more boost & fuel but cannot be put into a truck as there’s no way to plumb enough water to use for cooling unless you want to tow a swimming pool on a trailer. I personally performed a 3208 Turbo / Allison 5 speed automatic swap into a customer’s ‘83 Chevy Crew cab Dually when I was 25 at Hawthorne Caterpillar in San Diego in ‘85 , and used international harvester transmission side mounted motor mounts in rear & used Ford “ F” series front motor mount on custom fabricated 2” square tubing cross members . The oil pans did come in either front or rear sump applications along with oil pickup tubes to use depending on style , but finding those parts now almost 40 years out of production may be almost impossible. I had custom drive shaft made and fabricated a 3” down pipe from turbo to dual 2-1/2” exhausts , made a custom fabricated air filter adapter for intake that housed a large K&N filter & made a flange all the way around it to seal to a hole we had to cut in the hood for a true “ Cold air intake “ with rear facing cowl induction type G.M. Hood scoop. Custom radiator & surge tank mounted at firewall were also needed to get filler cap & tank higher than engine to keep air purged out of cooling system, and finally we had to remote mount the factory oil filter / oil cooler with a marine application adapter at block oil passages and some custom Tig-welding on factory engine cooler with braided steel flex hose to duct fluids to & from . Anything is possible with enough creativity , time & money . Good luck & I hope it all comes together nicely for ya . 😎👍

Yeah pretty close 425 -450 marine applications but they don't live, the big end journal's are only about the size of BBC stuff, just not enough bearing surface area, a bearing roll regularly is key to engine life along with as much oil capacity as you can possibly get and filtration filtration filtration, secondary bypass flow or Centrifugal a must and then hope you just don't literally brake it, hyway applications are harder on 3208 as constantly pulling down into lower rpm ranges is a life shortened, unlike marine applications where its set and forget high rpm running

Need to find a blown up 6.4 F450. Dirt cheap (comparatively) gut all the harnesses for 6.4, 5R and cluster, run mechanical gauge cluster, let cab standalone
