Compared to France, 35k prostitues but also nearly 70M people. Those numbers are disputed and approximate however, due to legal differences. I like that he always sings about subjects that aren't glamorous. He sings about real life things. And often things that are too real for casual conversations. One of his biggest inspirations also used to do this. Jacques Brel. Also a legendary Belgian singer, but from another time. He has been called the Modern Jacques Brel before.

5:03 Honestly you could call it contreversial. The title alone of the song could be considered contreversial. "Fils de joie" literally translated means "son of joy" but what it really means is "male prostitute", and listening to lyrics you can also understand it as "son of a prostitute". And in the song he talks about prostitutions and subjects that revolve around it.
@denns59712 жыл бұрын
Hello personally I have another interpretation of the title In French there is an expression which is "fille de joie" (girl of joy) which means prostitute or bitch Here he replaces girl by son of joy that means son of a bitch as he sings in his music "I'm a son of a bitch as they say" the title means "son of a bitch"

@kaihiroku84952 жыл бұрын
@@denns5971 Yes, basically he switched them up. "Fils de pute" being son of a bitch, "fille de joie" being litterally a prostitue. But "fils de joie" could very well be a male version of prostitute, which also goes to show that we don't have a term for male prostitues in french. Maybe he wanted to point that out as well? Like, it's always the women we disrespect. The wordplay is so deep.
@rachelc22272 жыл бұрын
He dont means male prostitute but the sun of mother prostitude. In old time we said in french for prostitude women Fille de joie. Stromae wanna said the sun because he saw tv show with children the mother protitute ansd hard was for this children.

Some women do want ( or like) to be sexworkers. Women also enjoy sex, shocker I know. Women are no different from men, socialization is where the big difference come to be. There are plenty of men out here being free sexworkers and no one bats an eye. Sex work is work, one of the oldest professions. Every human being deserves respect. Sex is not shameful, sexwork is service work. And with all the people partaking, in secret, it just shows how fucked up our societies are. How hypocritical. There is nothing wrong with being a sexworker. And for the women who do it and don't have a choice, if we really cared for these women we'd help them out of poverty. We don't care, we only care to judge them

It's a pun from "fille de joie", a phrase which in French is synonymous with "whore". " A girl of joy", meaning a woman who gives men joy. When he says "Fils de joie" (son of joy"), he posits himself as the son "fils" as the son who doesn't disavow his mom, albeit the latter is a prostitute.

Sadly Stromae is always trying to come off as a deep thinker with impact on society, yet it comes off forced and tacky. This is neither controversial nor shocking. He's just repeating things that are beyond debate. Leaving the lyrics aside it's a decent sounding pop song.

"decent sounding pop song"? The words that you chose to describe this song are surprising to me. "Decent" for me doesn't give justice to this song. Pop, on the other hand, is a completely different genre than this song. Seriously I could use so many words for this song but "pop" is definitely not one of them.

"yet it comes off forced and tacky" what the hell, you couldn't be more wrong about Stromae. He's always talking about things that doesn't have the attention it deserves, one example is "moules frites", a track of his previous album "Racine Carrée", that talk about STD's, but in a little "fun" story about a guy that like sex but seems to not care about protection. And probably will die because of it. This "decent sounding pop sound" it's a mix of classical music with brazillian funk, which I, as a Braziliian, love so much because here this genre was always treated as something prohibited and of bad taste, but after decades it became one of the best details in brazillian culture. For me, as a brazillian artist who knows the history behind the brazillian funk genre, inspiring a belgian artist and he even mixed with classical music (artists already done that here, but by doing that he shows how deep he searched and studied this genre to work with it on his album), this fill me with pride because it's a powerful genre and he used in a fantastic way. The wrong thing you did was just listen and talk the first thing you thought. You need to search why he did that, watch his "track by track" that he's doing on his channel. Understand why he chose this genre, why the lyrics sounds like that. Every artist has a motive behind every choice they make, and Stromae knew exactly what he wanted, how it needed to sound, what the best choices to make. Even after 8 years of hiatus, he kept evolving his art and this project is an example of that.
