On his absent father, he declared in 2019, "My father was never there for me. He left right away. He was a runner, a flirt. I learned much later that I had half-siblings. He was an architect who went back and forth between Belgium and Rwanda. I must have seen him twenty times in my life, and he died during the Rwandan genocide. But he had already disappeared for me, and when I learned of his death, I didn't cry. Perhaps I hadn't prepared myself. The fact remains that we won't be able to make up for lost time with this dad we didn't see when he was little."

The song is about the absence of a father, a story the singer himself experienced. Born of a Belgian mother and a Rwandan father, he had a fickle father, killed during the Rwandan genocide of 1994. We had to analyze this song in class today. It's been 5 years and i finally got the meaning of this song, dispite it being so obvious. His father doesnt pay attention to him, he's physically there, but not mentally paying attention to his son. The son saw the families together outside, the ones dancing, something he never got to do. At the end when he also turns doll-like, it signifies that we're basically newer versions of our parents, since our parents are our role models for our whole childhood, we learn from them and so the son became just like him.

Years before he met my mother, he went on a pilgrimage and gave Quran education. When I was born in his family, he had 7 different sacrifices sacrificed for each day in his own country and prayed for 7 different teachers, but since my mother could not leave her mother, who had Alzheimer's disease, he abandoned her and me when I was 6 months old in my mother's arms. If you ask, he is a perfect devout Muslim, I have never seen anything of his fatherhood. Being a father is not possible by saying "I love you, my daughter, I will come to see you, my daughter" on the phone. Dad, what kind of racism has your daughter been subjected to? The Kaaba has been destroyed. You cannot become a father just by writing your name on your identity card. Where are you, father? Where are you?

So our teacher either gives us lyrics (to which we can have to make a tune on or sing with instrumental) or he gives an actual French or English-translated song, The first two times we were given a choice of tune with our lyrics and the last time it was two songs and we had to sing any one of them. What's so sad about this video is that you could see the kid's potential. Because his dad wasn't there for him, he had to find his own way- and he created a beautiful and unique style of expression along the way. All the other kids were exact copies of their parental figure- but because the main character broke that mold, instead creating a style based around the absence of his father. It's so sad because for a minute, you think he's really going somewhere- and then he gives in to his doubts. He feels like he can't be a real, full person without a dad. He feels that he could never become a 'real man' because he had no one to mold his life after. It's so sad that he doesn't realize that you don't have to have a good dad to become a good person.

Aw- I'm glad I was able to share my interpretation- although you're not dumb because it's not the only interpretation that can be taken from the song/ video:) Yeah- that theme really just stood out to me because I know people who never really had a good home life. They feel like they'l never be able to get out of that cycle or be any good- and it's so sad. Glad I could help you see the song from that perspective:)
