After watching for the first time in a few years, I've changed my mind about the meaning behind this. Every Stromae fan knows the background of this song/video, but to me it can also describe living with a depressed parent. Notice how the son pushes the car with his dad at the wheel, or how he's in the bathroom while dad takes a shower. Almost as if their roles were switched and now he's the one taking care of dad, guiding him through daily tasks. And no matter what the kid does, he just can't grab his dad's attention since he's too numb/in too much pain to care about the world outside. Then at the end the son becomes numb too, from the lack of a father and anyone else who could have been there for him.

So that could be why everyone else is moving a lot and doing crazy dance moves, because they are not numb like the father....makes sense

The song is about the absence of a father, a story the singer himself experienced. Born of a Belgian mother and a Rwandan father, he had a fickle father, killed during the Rwandan genocide of 1994. The singer confessed during an interview to have cried during the writing probably for the lived side.

We had to analyze this song in class today. It's been 5 years and i finally got the meaning of this song, dispite it being so obvious. His father doesnt pay attention to him, he's physically there, but not mentally paying attention to his son. The son saw the families together outside, the ones dancing, something he never got to do. At the end when he also turns doll-like, it signifies that we're basically newer versions of our parents, since our parents are our role models for our whole childhood, we learn from them and so the son became just like him.

Something I find fascinating about the choreography of this video is the differences of the types of fathers and sons shown through their dance. In the first pair, the paperboys in pink uniforms, the father and son do a dance that relies heavily on partnership. A dance meant for two people to work and they help each other to pull it off. The second pair, the garbage collectors in orange, are perfectly in sync performing the same dance but separately. One person could do it solo but they're both a mirror of each other. They even do elegant ballet style leaps and turns that feel in direct contrast to the rigid robot style of the business men in the yellow and green suits. With the business man he's not dancing with his son or mirroring him, but trying to teach him and force him to do it his way even if the son is unhappy about it. But he still tries to have that connection with his father. The way the fluid ballet moves are cut in between the stiff pop and lock type moves are amazing and amplify the different ways of parenting via dance. But of course whether the sons are helping, mirroring, or learning from their fathers, they still have fathers who engage with them unlike the boy who is observing all these interactions. This is an amazing video. 💙🇫🇷 I want to learn french just to better appreciate stromae's videos but the language seems too difficult for me. 😞

Even the only female duo seem to have a particular feel to their dance, like the duality of beauty and strength in a woman. Their moves, similar to the garbage collectors, are also completely syncronized down to the outfits they wear, even walking dogs of the same breed. It's probably because the daughter is notably older than any of the sons -- most of the boys look from pre-teens to mid-teens, along with the subject of the song -- and thus has had the most time to grow up to be just like her mother.

Its sadder if you know the story about his dad: His dad went away when he was young, and he'd ask where his dad was and his mom would say "He's away on business." Things went on like this until he was 12 or so, when his mom told him the truth- His dad's father was having difficulties in his old age and needed help, so he returned back to his home country, Rwanda, in 1994. Stromae's father was killed in the genocide.

To be absolutely fair, a lot of songs have the same connotations lol La Macarena is about a girl cheating on her boyfriend "Vitorino", while he was talking his oath as a conscript "Macarena tiene un novio que se llama, Que se llama de apellido Vitorino Y en la jura de bandera del muchacho Se la dió con dos amigos" "Macarena has a boyfriend He goes by the name of Vitorino And while he took his oath of conscript She was giving it to 2 friends" Smooth criminal literally describes the murder of 2 people, presumably a couple. "He came into your apartment Left bloodstains on the carpet Then you ran into the bedroom You were struck down It was your doom" I don't care has a depressing bit about sometimes feeling okay, and sometimes not because nothing in life matters Run along, nothing to say 'Cause all along it never mattered anyway Sometimes, I feel like I'm okay Sometimes, I feel like I wanna run away

What's so sad about this video is that you could see the kid's potential. Because his dad wasn't there for him, he had to find his own way- and he created a beautiful and unique style of expression along the way. All the other kids were exact copies of their parental figure- but because the main character broke that mold, instead creating a style based around the absence of his father. It's so sad because for a minute, you think he's really going somewhere- and then he gives in to his doubts. He feels like he can't be a real, full person without a dad. He feels that he could never become a 'real man' because he had no one to mold his life after. It's so sad that he doesn't realize that you don't have to have a good dad to become a good person.

wow i never thought about it like that but reading those lines as i was hearing the song. chills started running down my spine as i realised how accurate it was and i started feel really dumb for not having seen it that way yet. you gave even more meaning to this song, thank you for opening my eyes.

Aw- I'm glad I was able to share my interpretation- although you're not dumb because it's not the only interpretation that can be taken from the song/ video:) Yeah- that theme really just stood out to me because I know people who never really had a good home life. They feel like they'l never be able to get out of that cycle or be any good- and it's so sad. Glad I could help you see the song from that perspective:)

That the boy solidified at the end is the most painful of it all. I wouldn't even argue that it's following only. I can imagine another world after the video that the boy 'follows' his father as a way to save him. ...call me an optimist but...

Papaoutai? Où t'es? Papaoutai? Où t'es? Papaoutai? Outai outai où papaoutai? Où t'es? Papaoutai? Où t'es? Papaoutai? Où t'es? Papaoutai? Papaoutai? Où t'es? Papaoutai? Où t'es? Papaoutai? Outai outai où papaoutai? Où t'es? Papaoutai? Où t'es? Papaoutai? Où t'es? Papaoutai? Outai outai où papaoutai?
