+KWiP Possessive = it has, contraction = it is. Which you can use as a rule of thumb for most other words.

I have the feeling that if Strong Bad taught most things, they'd be easier to learn, just because they'd be more fun. An update on our local station: They still can't come back from commercials for more than five minutes. The morning news anchor still looks, sounds, and acts like she belongs on a morning show. The sports correspondent is gone thankfully. The consumer editor, economic advisor, and technology correspondent are still the best of the team.
