I awoke early (around 5 AM) to witness an approaching Derecho, in far Northern NY, in July 1995. It swept from Ontario (Province AND Lake) across NY to Massachusetts, took down countless trees, killed some campers in the Adirondacks, and knocked out all power in three large counties. It was RIGHT the morning before two long-time friends were to get married (they did - by candle light and portable CD player) ! What I remember best was seeing the INCREDIBLE Strobe Lightning, as it approached. Similar to on this video. Thanks for posting.

What a memorable storm, and what an amazing experience that wedding would have been! Hopefully they’re still married and think back fondly to their big day!

Several rumbles towards the end of the video. The Thunder is likely too far away for most of it.

What you’re seeing is most commonly known as sheet lightning. Basically, lightning is reflecting off of cloud cover and can seem closer than it actually is. Cloud cover in nighttime thunderstorms will illuminate the lightning rather than obscure it. This is why a lot of times you’ll see videos where there’s a ton of lightning, yet little to no thunder.
