And we were the only team that 'beat' Australia in the pool match.... That match was probably one of the greatest matches of all time... Those days Pakistan was a true force to be reckoned with... The punishments meted out were just a eyewash.. infact it makes me think it was much darker and graver where the biggest of Pakistani players in that late 90's were involved in fixing headed by Wasim Akram. When investigations were carried out all involved made a conscious effort to not let any clue out which could be a danger to them. Even the investigations were pretty lame and looked like they were put in place to cover up their wrong doings and brush it under the carpet. The man who enjoys such respect from the cricketing fraternity Wasim Akram could have been a devil hiding behind his image of a great fast bowler on field.

Again this is something which we will never know what actually transpired but as don't agree with some of the statements of Waheed Sahab , i feel Pakistan's decision to bat first was the right decision, they had earlier defeated Australia at Headingly by batting first.One of the biggest things atleast I have been taught since childhood is back your strengths , if it doesn't come off you can't do much. Pakistan's strength has never been chasing so batting first was arguably the best thing to do, it ended in disaster that's a different story, similar conspiracy theories were raised after India's loss to Pakistan in 2017 champions trophy were the batting collapsed while chasing, (India during this period of time had almost chased 300 + against each and every opposition and potentially better bowling attacks in the last 7- 8 years) so chasing definitely was our strength, we didn't succeed that's a different story but Yup VK's decision to field first was absolutely right so we as sub Continental fans in general need to look at just like a game and not as a matter of life and death, certain section of fans in the Indian Subcontinent are no different than religious fanatics.

BTW Wasim Akram is a convicted match fixer per Justice Qayyum investigation and subsequent judgement. Ata Ur Rahman was banned from cricket for taking money from none other than Akram, yet Akram the head fixer was only banned from captaincy.

Throughout the tournament whenever Pakistan won the toss, they batted first. The first match of the tournament against Windies, Pak elected to bat first in what were really bowler friendly conditions. Batting first in the final was no surprise and the weather was clear in the final.

Such frank comments end up in lost credibility. If Justice Qayyum's enquiry was a hogwash, where is the evidence (even a shred of it) about it being so? If the players accused each others of wrongdoing, why should they quit their team and not the other one? As a journalist, you should have facts not speculations. Unfortunately, I have not come across many sports journalists who believe that their loyalty should be to the reader, not to the team. Your task is to report to the reader, not promote your team's interests. For that purpose we have the sports boards. You do your job and that is the only way we can have some professionalism in sports journalism as well as sports administrations.

We need to stop being so naive and gullible about this otherwise our cricket future is down in the gutter. Any one with an ounce of common sense or understanding of the game knows that 'bad days' just don't happen like that. On 20 June 1999, I was there at the loards sitting right in front at the nursery end and saw it all unfold ball by ball and wicket by wicket. After the fall of first few wickets even the Aussies knew the game was fixed, you could tell from their body language and dampened celebrations. The Guardian newspaper published an article next day titled "Wasim sticks to the wrong script" , search that in google and read it to get an idea of how obvious it was to everyone that it wasn't just a so called 'bad day'.

Everything being said about 99 final is in hindsight. Everyone knew at that time that Pak team couldn't chase. Imagine our team chasing even 200 in WC final. I remember everyone thought that half final is won since we r batting first. Also, in 4 overs, Pakistan was 24/0 without any trouble. Wajahat Wasti & Saeed went back to back & batting collapsed. If u look at most previous games, Pak top order had collapsed before as well and it was Moin & lower order which got us to 250. This time it didn't happen & we lost.

What you have said ia quite logical but Pak's loss against BD previously and Wasim's cheerful mood during after-match ceremony, especially after such a thrashing from Aussies, makes me think something was off.

@@taimur01 Pakistan despite having stars were never good chasers. BD & IND game proved that point amply. About Wasim's jolly mood, I think he was overall proud of his team & Pak team did very well in WC. If he had taken money, there was nothing that could stop him from acting sad as well. This is no smoking gun. Virat Kohli was very jolly after losing 2017 champions league final. Did that mean it was fixed as well? U must remember that winning WC final is pinnacle of anyone's career & Wasim would've gotten IK status if he had won. No one can fix this game. And it cannot be only Wasim Akram. At least 5-6 players need to be fixed to get a result like this. Do u believe that so many players were willing to fix their 1st WC final & remained silent forever?

Ah great day for gamblers.Its not so old u can asked any broker in karachi stock exchange prior to that few days everyone in stock was betting against Pakistan as the news its sold already by Wasim Akram & CO for 2.25 billion rupees(huge amount was that time ).Never bother to watch the match as everything was happening as bookies told would happen 2 days ago but what u expect from Wasim akram who did it before with BD match and who can forget 1996 QF where his father later beaten by bookies who suffered loses.

There has always been suspicion on Waseem akram. Many notable players and officals have said that he was defiantly involved in match fixing. I don't know if this is true or not so I won't comment. However as far as the decision to bat first in the 99' final goes. I think it was defiantly the correct decision. Pakistan was horrible at chasing targets. They were good defenders. Before the toss even Tony Craig said that if Australia win the toss and bat first and score anywhere near 250 then Pakistan might lose. Even right after losing the toss Steve Wagh said had I won the toss I would have bated first as well. So even the opposition wanted to bat first.

Actually it doesn't make sense, all players means besides Wasim all were involved then, In cricket these things happens, also we have the unpredictable cover we r carrying from long ago, Losing to Netherland in 2007 and winning CT17 from India was unpredictable cover but one thing is clear PCB should took strict action against fixing. .
