How to Maintain a great edge on your kitchen knives and pocket knives! How to Strop, tips and tricks. I get asked a lot how to Strop and this a great way to maintain your edge without sharpening all the time.. you can spend a lot of money on one, or little. honestly I can't tell the difference between a high end $80 strop or a $15 strop from Amazon. I would say get a cheap strop but splurge and get great Emulsion.
here's a medium expensive strop:

I use a Work Sharp with a leather belt and a 5 micron diamond and then switch belts to a .5 micron belt, always on the slowest speed possible with light pressure and I'm able to get amazing results in about 3 to 6 passes on each side, less than a minute, sometimes only one pass is needed to bring back a razor sharp edge. I can't imagine the time it takes to strop hundreds of strokes for each side of a blade. I have dozens of knives but only heavy use about ten of them and they all love that slow speed leather treatment for tune ups, I never need to sharpen my blades really, leather belts for touch ups is it. I do sharpen friends knives just for fun and that keeps my skill up. I admire your dedication to sharpening but I'll stick to powered stropping unless I have no choice I think.

Holy smokes! I’ll stop maybe 15x each side. Do you do that for a mirror polish?

This is an old video, I only do 15 per side now. Maybe time to retire this video.

It depends on how much you're using it of course but yes you reapply it when most of the compound has been removed. For me it's anywhere between 5 and 10 knives.
