PAST BOARD EXAM PROBLEMS
Structural Engineering & Construction
Situation 12
Given the following date:
Bolt diameter = 20mmø
Bolt hole diameter = 23mmø
Plate thickness = 25 mm
Bolt shear strength Fvb=120 MPa
Bolt bearing strength Fpb=480 MPa
Plate shear strength Fvp=138 MPa
Fy = 250 MPa & Fu = 400 MPa
1. Determine the max. load P based on the shearing strength of bolts. (339.3 kN)
2. Determine the max. load P based on the bearing strength of plate
(2160 kN); and
3. Determine the max. load P based on the tensile capacity of the plate (1125 kN).
