Long bones function as rigid bars that move when muscles contract¹. 2. **Short Bones**: These are cube-like in shape, being approximately equal in length, width, and thickness. The only short bones in the human skeleton are in the carpals of the wrists and the tarsals of the ankles. Short bones provide stability and support as well as some limited motion¹. 3. **Flat Bones**: These are typically thin and often curved. Examples include the cranial (skull) bones, the scapulae (shoulder blades), the sternum (breastbone), and the ribs. Flat bones serve as points of attachment for muscles and often protect internal organs¹. 4. **Irregular Bones**: These do not have any easily characterized shape and therefore do not fit any other classification. These bones tend to have more complex shapes, like the vertebrae that support the spinal cord and protect it from compressive forces¹. 5. **Sesamoid Bones**: These are small, round bones that form in tendons. Sesamoid bones protect tendons by helping them overcome excessive forces but also allow tendons and their attached muscles to be more effective¹. The vertebral column is a series of approximately 33 bones called vertebrae, which are separated by intervertebral discs⁵. It can be divided into five different regions, each characterized by a different vertebral structure⁵. The vertebral column has four main functions: - **Protection**: It encloses and protects the spinal cord within the spinal canal⁵. - **Support**: It carries the weight of the body above the pelvis⁵. - **Axis**: It forms the central axis of the body⁵. - **Movement**: It has roles in both posture and movement⁵. Each vertebra consists of an anterior vertebral body, which is weight-bearing, and a posterior vertebral arch. The vertebral arch forms an enclosed hole - the vertebral foramen. The foramina of all the vertebrae line up to form the vertebral canal, which encloses the spinal cord⁵. The vertebral arches have several bony prominences that act as attachment sites for muscles and ligaments⁵..
