APA style can be intimidating. There are so many different nuances and details that we often forget to include to make a document true APA style. I have professors that ask for APA style, but then don't require even a header. With that being said, I have never written a paper about a research study before (proposal, real, fake, or otherwise) so this is a daunting task for me. This video was helpful because it breaks it down into easier steps to present just the basic requirements. I like how there is some freedom as to what can be included in each section and where some details go. That makes it a little less scary. Introducing these simple steps makes me realize that all of the details included are things we would already know if we were to do research for real, so it would not be difficult just to put it in writing. After breaking just the methods section down like this, I understand why peer-reviewed research documents are so long and I have a greater appreciation for the work that goes into completing and publishing research.

I found it interesting that the author picks the sub-headings for the Measures section in an APA paper. I don't remember that from my undergrad classes. I appreciated the disclaimer that the four sections are what Dr. Grande uses and meant as a starting point. I also found it logical to keep participants and procedures separated as it is outlined in this video. I agree with the important emphasis placed on adding all details, even those that are easy to leave out, keeping in mind that the goal is that the study can be replicated by outside researchers. This emphasis continues through reporting all dependent variables regardless of whether they're used in the finished manuscript. I did not realize how important the outline visuals were in these videos until they did not match the voice track for the measures and statistical analysis. The in-depth descriptions of each heading and sub-heading in the methods section and examples enhance realistic application and paper writing application.

APA formatting has always been a point of contention and a difficult to grasp writing formula. The breakdown offered during the video went beyond the typical formatting features and covered areas like participants, procedures, measurements, and statistical analysis. Description of sample outlines important notations regarding the demographics of the participants. Including all demographic characteristics allows the reader to gather a clear picture of the sampled population. Disorders should also be included in the participant section due to the possibly of such to impact the study. This video serves as an excellent resource in formatting the research assignment.

I think as students, we all have a little trouble getting APA perfectly, so I appreciate the breakdown of the format for the method section. During undergrad at Wilmu we had a senior seminar class in which we had to create a research proposal and present it to a mock IRB board, our professor did not explain this breakdown to us or explain how to structure the paper. For instance, I would not have thought to break up the methods section into sub-headings such as participants, procedures, measures, etc. I would have just assumed they held their own paragraph, but not to label them with sub-headings. I think this makes the paper appear more clean and concise.

It was nice to see which subheadings were portrayed to be most useful to include while writing the methods section. The video was a great overall informative place to start and helped to show why these subheadings were so basic and fundamental in explaining your research methods and why you selected the ones you did. This was a great summation on top of the APA publication manual. The only thing that seemed a little bit heavy were all of the demographics that were suggested to be included in the participant section. More than ten were listed and I would think that in some cases, that could be both difficult to obtain for each participant and could even be revealing if you were pulling from a specific geographic region.

In my opinion the methods section is the most difficult to read because it appears very jumbled but this breakdown I think will help with reading methods sections, not just writing them.

Alicia Zahn I re-watched this video after we had our class with Dr. Grande and we discussed our research proposals and I think you have the right idea with using it as a guideline to help us! I also agree with you that it is difficult sometimes to pull out these important bits when reading a scholarly, peer-reviewed article. This made it seem much less foreign and terrifying. I also liked how he discussed the bare minimum one needed to include, which jives with what he told us in class!

Alicia Zahn As I watched this video I was also taking notes as to how I would apply this to my upcoming paper. This is a great starting point. I was able to come up with some questions that I had not thought of prior to watching this video. I will be viewing this video again as I work on my paper. I feel that I have a better understanding of what I need to look for in my articles.

Alicia Zahn I'm definitely going to bookmark this video because it really breaks it all down. It almost sounds like fun to recount all of the details of a study and present them so someone could perform it after you to determine validity. To be honest, a lot of times I skip reading this section when I read a research study because it has so much information. But after watching this, I know how valuable it can really be. I agree that this video can help with reading this section as well.

I really don't mind writing in APA format because I have become use to it. But I see that the formatting and heading are going to be different from what I'm use to. I think the video did a good job explaining the different sections.

I thought this was a really great refresher for writing the method section for our papers.

This video was a very good refresher and will certainly come in handy when it comes time to write this semster's paper. It was surprsingly that we need to include a step-by-step description of what the participants nad researchers experienced during the experiment in the procedure section. After he explained it, it made sense but I never would have thought to include that.

Susan Wilder I agree this video was an excellent refresher. The in depth formatting explanation will prove invaluable in organizing the research paper and ensuring the research design encompasses essential details such as demographics, setting, procedure, etc. I didn't realize step by step accounts of the participants was necessary to include in the research paper. Definitely will be revisiting this video.

I agree! I will be referring back to this video when it comes time to structure out my own proposal including the specific information but also the APA.

Susan Wilder I thought the same thing as I watched this video. I always have trouble organizing the sections of papers so I really like that research papers really don't give me a choice as to how to lay it out because there is a specific format that I can just follow and it makes it easier to write the paper I think.

Thank you for this very informative video. I like the idea of subheadings because it teases apart the most important components of your study and puts emphasis on them individually. I see the significance of all the subheadings; the only ones I would think about possibly combining are 'procedure' and 'measures' just because won't you be mentioning the measurements you will be using when explaining your procedure?

Very informative on the options of sections and what to include in those selected sections. I would probably combine to make larger cohesive methods section.

This video was very informative and helpful for writing the methods section of a research paper. I thought it was interesting to include the experiences of both the participants and researchers in the procedure sub-section. I feel that prior research articles I have read did not include enough information on the experiences of individuals involved in a study. Overall, I feel more confident in being able to write my own methods section of a paper.

Hi, I agree that including the experiences of both the participants and researchers in the procedure sub-section is interesting. It provides additional and helpful information on both side of the experiment. It would be very interesting to see if the experiment and perspectives are similar or different as well as any differences between the experiences of the researchers and participants.

Very helpful. Many of the studies I have read do not have the kind of detail that Dr. Grande is suggesting here. Nonetheless, very helpful and instructive.

Much like everyone else I have had past experience with writing hypothetical research study papers. I did not have a breakdown of what was necessary information in a methods section, and simply looked at other studies methods sections to base my off of. After watching this video I have a greater understanding of the detail and statistics needed to make a methods section be legitimate. The part of this video that was the most difficult for me to understand was the statistical analysis. I have a difficult time with math, so this part was very confusing to me. I am not familiar with the different ways to calculate the statistics. I can infer what the result is but not how to get an answer.

I'm still really confused and my paper is due in three hours. The college professor just gave a KZbin video link and said to create my own opinion on the documentary. The documentary didnt give any information on when it was made or who it was made by. How am I supposed to put participants down for that? It was just a reporter going and talking to people about human trafficking. Please, does anyone understand?

Do you really think that putting the patient characteristics in the Methods section is correct? In the methods, I usually describe my population with regard to the sampling time frame, geographic region(s), community, urban or rural hospital. The number of participants and their demographic characteristics I save for the results section and as Table 1. You seem to suggest differently.
