They were fighting because they were the last remaining Alpha titans, and Kong never bowed before the recognized Alpha of Godzilla. Then Godzilla chose to spare Kong, he didn't see Kong as a threat that needed to be killed...he had shown who was the King of Monsters. Then in the end, they recognized each other as allies and not enemies, willing to coexist on the side of humanity, but in their own worlds.

Either both continue and one of them die or just called it quit and just leave it as it is. Godzilla prove to Kong he was the dominant one during their fight but Kong proved when push comes to shove he can tackle a challenge head on without backing down. Add in the fact Kong had backed up Godzilla against Mecha G goes to show Kong had the strive to face the bigger threat. When all was said and done, both Titans were already at their limit. They now know where each other stand and both were more than happy to withdraw to not further push their already driven instinct to face one another. Once again in my mind, Godzilla had prove himself as the Dominant King while Kong had proven himself a valuable but formidable Ally when push comes go shove and that's why I find this movie great.

@@everything9466 when two animals are fighting for dominance and one has made a decisive blow they generally roaring at each other with one coming up on top in and the other sounding back to show submission, that's why Godzilla looked at Kong the way he did and walked away after that 🦧 fell in line that's how animals do. Godzilla could have easily killed Kong there if he wanted to be he didn't which is another thing animals do once the dominance is settled, he just made his point.

All of Kong's powerful punches and kneecap blows honestly didn't damage Godzilla much only with that axe was he able to pierce Godzilla's skin, whereas Godzilla claws ripped Kong's flesh easily. At the end of the day folks despite all the hype Kong never had a chance against Godzilla. Kong got heart tho I'll give him that, but Godzilla doesn't give a shit about heart LITERALLY 🤷🏿‍♂️
