It is very important that while practicing slow, the right hand movement is the same one you use when picking fast. Don’t use one motion for slow picking practice and another for fast shredding .

I remember doing this when I started playing. I gave it a try and it is so much harder than I remember it to be. Old fingers and all that. Tackar mycket för dina lektioner!

@JonBjorkMusic Thanks for the lessons. Can you please do one on where/how to hold your right hand? Some say rest it on the guitar and strings, others say don't rest your hand or palm but keep it floating above (resting on the guitar between your writst on elbow). I wouldn't want to do all this practice and find out im doing it all wrong because of my right hand. It would all be for nothing as I'd have to re learn everything.... thanks. PS, I havn't seen anyone do a proper lesson on this and I'm sure it would help others.

Thanks man! It’s never too late, the brain’s plasticity slows down a bit after 80 years but you’re able to learn for as long as you live. Get that guitar in your hands any time you watch tv and you’re bound to get better quickly😊

Love this exercise. When doing this exercise slowly, I like to think the note name on the fretboard in my head while doing it. You can double up on this and reinforce the notes on the neck. Awesome!

perhaps make a video on the basics of getting the riffing right... there are very few videos on the subject available
@JonBjork
@JonBjork 10 ай бұрын
It’s a tricky subject in that I feel it’s always better to work on the riffs YOU like as opposed to exercises. When it comes to technique in general (which will also help riffs) it makes more sense to have exercises as well as working on specific licks.

@Jon Bjork, do you have a video of "proper muting strings you're not playing"/"achieving a clean sound"? I'm a member, but can't see a specific one. Ben Eller did one "Why you suck at guitar, your muting sucks!" and that was really good, but I would really like to hear your view on the subject. I've been playing for 30 years (really on-and-off during the last 20), and I've always been practicing technique (instructional videos from Paul Gilbert, John Petrucci, etc) and learning songs from TAB books, but I really feel that all of them is missing how to properly mute the strings that you're not playing. I have issues with ringing empty strings and other noises, so how do you go about minimizing that?

That's the right attitude! This shit takes time if you want to do it right, so happy to see this mentality instead of the usual hacks/quick fix bs thinking.

@JonBjorkMusic excellent video, but I couldn't really see where you rest your hand. Is it the bottom of the wrist just above the strings and if so, do you move your whole arm down slightly to reach the high B and E strings? Or are you resting your hands lightly on the strings as you play.... or are you holding your hand above the strings altogether? I just can't tell from the video, but I'd love to know. It's like any technique you learn and can be super important. When I first learnt guitar (I knew how to play a bit because my dad showed me. He played guitar and banjo in a band and did vocals. He also went to 8th grade piano and was very good), my teacher showed me the proper way to hold a pick (I use to hold it like EVH) and that simple knowledge made a HUGE difference. I think its the same with where you put your hand when picking. I tend to rest the bottom of my palm on the guitar but it doesn't work as I move to the higher strings. I hope you get where I'm coming from and can help.... thankyou.

That’s the whole point of the video though. Everyone will do it slightly differently and there’s no “right” way that’ll be best for everyone. Steve Morse also holds the pick like EVH and is arguably one of the best pickers ever. By going through the process I explain in the video, you can find the best way for you to do it. I find that a lot of people are looking for the perfect way of doing something instead of putting in the hours of correct practice (focus on accuracy, relaxation and good tone). Constantly changing techniques will make it very hard to get anywhere. So find what works the best for you now, put in the hours and hours of practice and you’ll get there.

@JonBjorkMusic thanks for the reply. I really like your technique so can I ask how you actually hold your right hand? That way I can try your way, and maybe a couple of others to see what fits me best, but I need a place to start and as I said, I love your technique. You don't struggle at all with hand placement and you make things look effortless. I've seen a few other "teachers" that seem like they are struggling at speed. They get the notes but it feels like they are seconds away from things falling apart. I'm very happy to try your way. Just like the pick holding, it felt really weird for a few days then it all felt perfect. I'm sure it will be the same way for my right hand technique but I don't know where to start. I think you have it down perfectly. Thanks again (as I said maybe others would like this advise. You mentioned other players so maybe showing your technique plus maybe 2 others then giving people a place to start and some options to see what best fits. As NOBODY has made a video like this it might be very popular and would fit in with your other speed and hand sync videos.... just a suggestion though).
