Working with the Strymon combo doesn't feel like patching. It feels like travelling through beautiful landscapes. In this video I used simple sources to highlight some of the cool features this combo has to offer. It's a great way to spend a rainy afternoon.
Opening piano theme composed by Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard (Gladiator soundtrack).

this video for sure goes down in my top 3 of the top ten list of your videos. morphagene and magneto are responcible that i am heavily heavily modular addicted since almost 2 years. i adaded starlab to the family couple of weeks ago...respectively that was a gift from my mom and sis. and these 3 modules together are such a world power!!! thank GOD i own them. but there is another sad thing. i let the telharmonic go. don't ask me why ... prob. the biggest mistake I've done. now i am looking for one like a lunatic maniac!!! amazing video !

as always, great video! I own and love the magneto, use it in every patch. for verb duty I use the desmodus versio. how does the batverb compare to the starlab in your opinion? is it comparable at all?
@CinematicLaboratory
@CinematicLaboratory 2 жыл бұрын
Desmodus is still my favorite reverb, but my style is experimental and cinematic. StarLab covers a lot of the same ground but you'll need to push it a bit more to make it go crazy. StarLab wins on sound quality which is 'pro' level, but it can't beat the swapping of firmwares on Desmodus.The playlist also has a video of Magneto running through the Versios and it just blows your mind if you love sound design. However, there are lots of situations where you'd want a reverb to be a reverb adding beautiful color and depth to a patch. StarLab is exactly that. My 'Space' video (same playlist) shows a compare between a few major reverbs. Regardless, Desmodus has been a wise choice.

Thanks for the video. I want to invest in Magneto and some good reverb. I am at the beginning of the road with modulars. I really like sound design and probably for the beginning it will be Desmodus.

Fav demo so far of the strymon modules. How do you powering all those from your CV Bus case? Only problem I find with mine is there’s never enough juice! Have you modded it?

I love the StarLab a lot but I am a bit like a reverb collector. For me, personally, Desmodus remains #1, followed by StarLab. I think StarLab is more suitable for ambient, moody and atmospheric patches while Desmodus is more experimental and unrealistic - which suits my music better. And Desmodus is only 10 HP with additional firmware options and about 200 credits cheaper...

@@CinematicLaboratory Great reply thx so much! Yeah reverb is just so wonderful and its incredible how much impact it has on sound. My most addictive effect but too guilty to be a collector, your inspiring me to get over that. Yeahhh that price and hp is a bit to swallow. Good problems to have.

I’ve not moved on in Ambient really since 1972 with No Pussyfooting by Fripp and ENO that says it all but some of your exploits remind me of this but without main Melodic counterpoint ( Fripps Guitar) but close👍🆒🎶🎶🕸⚡️🔱🌈👁👽

I don't think I care much about ambient either, but it's just a small step from ambient to cinematic atmospherics where you feel like holding your breath as the wall[paper starts moving and stuff starts dripping down the ceiling :)

I'm hesitating in buying Magneto, due mostly to its hp hogging size. Maybe you can say a few words to convince me (for or against)?
@CinematicLaboratory

OK, here's my personal view on it. Rainmaker is the best delay ever, but it doesn't sound like tape and it's even bigger than the Mag. Magneto has a smoothness you just can't dislike. It just sounds absolutely stunning and it syncs very easily with clocks. Delays that can keep good rhythm are Magneto and Mimeophon. But Mimeophon doesn't sound like tape either. It sounds like Tom Erbe and MakeNoise. I'd say if serious tape delay is a crucial part of your music it's either Magneto or Lubadh with V2 firmware, where Lubadh is more like a reel recorder and Magneto only does the classic tape delay job. Other great delays like Ghost, Nautilus and Imitor Versio are clearly digital with a favor for either dance music or crazy experiments. I hope this helps, but YOU need to convince yourself.

@@CinematicLaboratory Thanks so much for the info/reply. I should say I'm not so worried about delays or tape sound (interesting as they are). I was sort of curious about the Magneto's looping possibilities, especially combined with the tap time etc. I have a 1010 bitbox which I should try to work more with for this type of thing, however it looks as thought the Magneto is very hands on and immediate - the bitbox is very powerful, but quite fiddly (also I'm amazed 1010 won't address the input routing which is a waste of real possibilities). Lastly, it's interesting that you mention the Nautilus, Imitor Version and I'll add the Aurora. One the main things I'm trying to sort out in my rack is the HN FX Aid, which although has some great sounds, I find very annoying to use although I see there's a Pro version now. However, it would be nice to get some looping possibilities and maybe interesting reverbs in one module, hence the Magneto curiosity. BTW, the Aurora is also high up on my list of effects modules as it seems very manipulable.

Too bad the Strymons are such power and space hogging wall heaters. I do miss the Magneto at times.

I also miss a permanent spot for them and I will not use them in every single patch, but they're great assets and I don't think I will ever part with them as long as it's up to me.

I don't get it with these modules. They're so big and expensive. Like, they're super flexible, but I feel like they're designed like hardware VSTs rather than modular components of an instrument - that is, the interface is bloated with options abs seems to lack artistic intent. I just don't need that many ways to alter the character of my reverb. I do need space for stuff that's not reverb.

You can get space for stuff that’s not reverb by buying a bigger case. I like my modules not cramped, makes it easier and more fun to use them.
