Too tragic for words. 7 brilliant people, who worked so hard to get where they were. 16 days of stressful experiments all for it to end like that. We will never forget them....

And I thought I was the only one in the world who enjoyed skipping the commercials manually!

When I clicked on this I thought to myself: please, please, not another tv recording where the commercials have been removed for my "convenience".

It sounds silly now, but in 100 years time, when Historians look back at this video, they will also be grateful that the adverts (commercials) weren't removed. The years tick by remarkably quickly, something you may have posted "A couple of years ago" soon becomes 20 yrs, then 30, then 50, etc.... We speak to the Anthropologists of 2117 through what we post in the here and now. Hello, future! *waves excitedly*... ;P

if this was a research flight why didn't they send the experiment on the iss

1) Because they were deploying an Israeli communications Satalite which put them at a different orbital altitude than the ISS. 2) even if they were at the same altitude, the Columbia was not certified to dock with ISS because it did not have the docking equipment making it the only shuttle without the equipment.

CptMikeTango Because the ISS was full at the time. And the Columbia didn’t have a docking station.

Not that it would have helped at 150k plus feet up, at 14,000mph during reentry, when they broke up... but I find it ironic that non of them had their helmet visors down and locked. Like I said, it wouldnt have help at their speed and alt, but What is the purpose of wearing pressure suits, if you don't wear them proporly.
