No, he used a lip trill

I played this as part of my recital for my master's degree and I had it memorized. A faculty member should be able to memorize it as well.

considering he's in the new york phil and you aren't, i dont think he needs the music. He also most likely didn't spend long preparing this, hence using the music as a crutch

There are advantages to playing from memory and playing from sheet. Memory puts me in the moment while the sheet lets me see what is coming!

He could play it better than you. If you were using sheet music and had three years to prepare. Can it buddy. Memorisation is not required for a recital to be great.
