As an ex seaman I found this very interesting have only transferred oil whilst at anchor,I have got one question which ship is in charge of the navigation when this process is underway,say when a course correction is needed?

Yes, can be done for large vessels at open sea with minimal manoeuvring speed (prior STS Operation, navigational warning was broadcasted for Safe Navigation of other ships in the vicinity).

It is easier to do when there is no assist tugs.

you see ，the sea is calm， it's easy for vessels to keep relative static. or maybe moving is just the key purpose of this operation，they want to challenge it .

The ship has different speeds (dead slow, slow, half, full, nav full) such types of operations are done at dead slow. Pilot embarkation / disembarkation, stocking up on provisions and spares, offloading any items from the ship for testing / shore repair are also some of the additional operations that are done in transit. Not all the time, but it is done. Of course proper precautions and safety measures are taken 👍💯

Operation done off Bahamas. STS provider was "Fendercare".
