This made me fix a phone in around 10 minutes by knowing about the testpoints. I could identify where I needed to look and found a filter that got knocked loose...Thanks! Keep it up!

This repair is probably the easiest option for 6 Plus or 6S Plus. You could have pulled the shield and ran a wire because usually the Anode is all that fails on the 6S series. Never seems to make it back any further unless water damage. Either way it works and should last a long time. Only critical thing I can say is tell your viewers that lines like this jumper should be covered in a underfill coating after finished to prevent unneeded shorts and possible secondary line failure.
@ststele
@ststele 8 жыл бұрын
Thanks Chris :) If it was a longer jumper, I would stress it but on this one, I just put a piece of tape over it, then Apple's tape over that! LOL Thanks for watching and commenting

I actually just replaced a screen on a 6S plus that I couldn't test prior to the replacement (broken LCD). Put a new one in and saw half backlight. What's interesting is on mine I saw signs of previous work as well. Well, it looked more like possibly an Apple refurbished board. The sticky foamy borders were around all the connectors but A LOT of the overfill coatings were missing except for in a couple spots. I'm gonna see if I can fix this.

One thing from my perspective is that we often sell ourselves short in our business. A blown cap might be quick and easy for you now but remember the trouble it took to get to that level. remember the cost involved to get all the tools in order to properly diagnose and repair that blown cap. $50 for a quick and easy backlight repair? With utmost respect, I would like to suggest to charge more. At least $100 for opening that phone and performing that job. Personally, I respect anyone who has phased out screen repairs and take note that it takes a lot of guts to do so. We walk away from not just headaches but we walk from a good revenue stream. I personally believe that phasing out screen repairs at my store slowly has given me the time I need to learn macbook repairs. I wish that the moment I saw Louis' first video I had gone that route about one year ago. I mean struggling to learn is the fun part from my perspective. From the business perspective I want to maximize my profits in the limited time I have available to do these repairs. I have a young family at home and they need me as well once dinner time rolls around. Even then, it's hard to find that balance. Please never sell yourself short; look at the comments where people compare you to Louis! If I recall, Louis has a video about charging by how long it took to figure it out or something to that affect. All the best, and I too am a huge fan of your videos, and would also put you in with Louis, Jessa, Mark (ipad rehab), Jason, and the guy from microsoldering.com!

This was very good to read! I only fixed one for that cheap for a local shop who accidentally blew FL4211 on a 6S and I thought, "OMG, look how easy these will be!" Since then I've changed quite a few drivers and spent hours on all sorts of troubleshooting on those and that repair now starts at $95. If I replace FL4211, it is $95 plus return shipping. If I wind up pulling the shield and replacing any of the underfilled IC, diodes or filters, I charge $150 (but should be $200 on a 6S, I know :)) What we go through to be successful in these repairs is really quite spectacular. Just the expectations that people have in us is worth $100 minimum. It really bothers me to see people on eBay doing these repairs for $40 but I know for that price, they can't really spend a reasonable amount of time troubleshooting anything and have no room for warranty work. One of these touch IC previous repair eBay seller attempts that got sent here was told, "sometimes you have to leave it on a shelf for a week or two before they are right"... LOL - it had no touch. This comment inspires me to continue revising our price list while keeping the rest of the repair community in mind and not only our local situation here. Thank you :)

Stellar Cellular True I can't stand people on eBay offering these services for like $40! Of course people go all for it. These repairs aren't easy at times and don't know why some charge such ridiculous low prices. Taking customers away from people who actually know what they're doing

This happened to me. I was installing a new screen and forgot to unplugg battery, so I shorted something out when I was placing the power flex on the connector. I think a backlight filter went out. Long story short, I wait a few days, re-install the phone using Itunes and the screen is working fine with the dark spot gone. I'm 100% sure something happened to the phone because I switched several lcds and they were all black on left top corner. So make sure you re-install phone before attempting repair.

Great video thanks for what you are doing! I do iphone repairs part time and can't wait to try fixing my Display test phone iphone 6s where I didn't disconnect battery and have blown at least a filter and who knows what else! Lesson learned the iphone 6s and 6s + are powered even when turned off lol... Just ordered an overkill JBC Nase-1b micro tweezer and micro pencil station to start seriously working over the next few years at getting to your level of confidently working on motherboards. A challenge and kinda fun. Thanks again & keep it up.

Aaah darn. I showed the customer what was going on with the backlight and offered to attempt to fix it (not with the jumper thing here but with replacing the filters). He said it wasn't a big deal so I didn't get to do it. :( In any case I did learn this phone was definitely a refurbished one. It didn't have the plastic film over the components and it looked like the filters had been replaced once before, definitely by Apple because the coating was missing around the filter regions almost entirely.

Those are nice surprises though. When you finish a job and there's some gut-wrenching flaw that the customer winds up being ok with. LOL! I ran into those situations a LOT with screen replacements. :)

Thanks! It is still useful video. A friend brought 6s plus for me to look at, and I found this video. And of course backlight filter was carbonized and the whole path and via down the board burned out. So I tried the trick with bridging test points for both backlight anodes and now I have power on that side of backlight, but it looks like the connector got somewhat melty when the backlight line burned out so it doesn't make contact anymore. Bummer, but replacing the connector is way beyond me ;-( So it was fun adventure.

Thanks Tony! This was only the 2nd one I wired like that. The customer called a few days later to say thanks... and that they watched the video. I'm surprised after seeing the video they didn't convince themselves that the screen was dimmer. ha! I know seeing the way these things can charcoal filters and blacken areas of components after doing so, there must be plenty of power to run some LED's. The cathodes on both ICs are still at work so I don't think it totally cuts out both drivers.

@ststele
@ststele 7 жыл бұрын
Not sure on that one... This was days ago so you may have already figured it out. Brightness not going beyond a certain point is normally a coil but on the 6s/6s+ there is a pair of coils for each driver. If this jumper is installed safely without any other damage to the phone or shorting to pads around it, it is safe to try. It is not a proper fix, but it can work if your options are limited.

Do you or anyone else know why they have two circuits for each half of the screen if clearly you can get both to run off one? Is it for brightness control? Therefore less brightness when using only one circuit to power both sets of leds?
@ststele
@ststele 7 жыл бұрын
I'm honestly not sure. I know either side of the circuit can pump out quite a bit of current with what I've seen it do to the filters. It's common to see them melted into blobs with the surrounding components charred from heat. I'm not sure what the specs are though. Since this video, I haven't jumpered another one like that. I see the pads completely gone from the current quite a bit and on those, I solder a new backlight filter directly to the backlight output cap for whichever driver/side it is. Then I run the jumper from the test point to that filter. I move the filter to the driver end of that wire so that the wire is fused. Then I cover it all up with black goop so it blends right in =) It's hard to see it when I'm done. On the board in this video, seeing that the last guy jumpered from the cap to the filter, I'm going to say the pad under the filter was gone.. he just thought he could get some power out of that cap :D Not realizing that the juice was coming from beneath that missing pad.

hi ZxW tools is include schematics ?
@ststele
@ststele 8 жыл бұрын
It comes with Blackfish which is for schematics while ZXW is the green/board view software. I typically use ZXW for the board view then PDF files for the schematics.
