There's not much I haven't played over the last 60 years. a good set of pipes is never outgrown. they just go out of style. CNC pipes are machine made replicas of original and classic designs. In other words they are precise and consistent with close and repeatable tolerances. They are essentially clones of one another and close to identical in almost every way. Old pipes can be a nightmare for the uninitiated. Unless you're a specialist in solo competition - these are what you want - among others. At every level the actual sound becomes a matter of the individual piper's taste. Ebony, for instance, has a different timbre from Blackwood, Cocobolo, Mopane', Cocus wood etc. It becomes like choosing a fine malt whiskey for discerning players, and an obsession for some. 12 sets oldest is 1890's at the moment. I've had older. I'm addicted.

@youdonthavetoreadthispost.58502 жыл бұрын
I can tell you what will play in them but not what he chooses. Start with Canning and you probably will stay there. These drones have a unique combination. Use carbon fiber tongue for the bass and poly tongue for the tenors and you'll get a nice sounding combination without too much buzz in the tenors and a good strong bass drone to go with them. I got good results. Balance-Tone is also a good option.

Of course they sound incredible in the hands of Stuart Liddle: He could probably make Pakistani pipes sound good. Question is, how would they sound when I play them?
@alvinnathan8458 жыл бұрын
If your pressure is steady,it would sound exactly the same
@tylerduncan94936 жыл бұрын
Alvin Nathan there is a little more to it than that. Pressure is just a part of getting a good sound from a set of pipes. Drone reeds choice, setup, strength of the drone reeds and chanter reed, brand of pipe chanter, material used (ie poly/wood) and various other variables contribute to the sound produced, not just pressure

I'm a collector and retired teacher. I own two sets SL-3 and SL-4. Decent drones and workmanship on a production bagpipe - but I also have instruments well over 100 years old by some of the great makers of their time. These are makers that have been extensively copied. I feel qualified to judge having a dozen sets in my possession at this time. You're listening to a great player, who has perfect pitch, on a world class chanter. Add $400 to the basic price if you want, and invest in your chanter. That's what your hearing most here, unless you just focus on the drones and their sound only, which I judge as modern to accommodate today's higher pitch. Authentic and vintage or antique bores were designed for a lower pitch. They are based on a design that was meant for that, so 476hz is much higher than the original designers intention. reeds have also changed. If you like McCallum pipes, you will like these too, but they sound different, which is really just a matter of taste. There are others but these are a decent bang for your buck in this arena. 60 years a piper and Grade 1 by fifteen - enjoying my retirement from practice. Willie McCallum is also a tremendous bagpiper himself. More traditional than S.L.

@youdonthavetoreadthispost.58502 жыл бұрын
MacRae - they're modeled on his grandfathers pipes. It's a wee bit different sound. The thing is that S.L. is also - Rock steady ! His "tone" is immaculate and he makes it look easy. Blowing tone is an art in bagpiping. Not everyone can do it and hold it like he can. This is expert level play.

@piperbob29 жыл бұрын
Danny mcClintock Duncan MacRae was a bagpipe maker in Glasgow who started his business in 1897; he had many distinctive features incorporated in some of his pipes including a threaded, tuneable bass drone top, a chanter grip, hempless metal tuning slides, and tenor drones with different diameter bores, making one slightly quieter than the other. Many of his pipes would doubtless have been lost and destroyed during the 1st WW, so they are a rarity now. This is Stuart Liddell playing an accurate replica of his old MacRae pipes, made by McCallum Bagpipes.
