Stubai UltraTrail 32km from Neustift to Stubai Glacier. The trail run consisted of 3100m ascent and 960m descent. This was our very 1st trail run and the experience was unreal.
I finished in a time of 6hrs 56mins and Mathis finished with a time of 6hrs 53mins.
2 weeks before the race we traveled from Bremen to Grainau as the plan was to take part 1st in the 64km zugspitz ultratrail but due to corona got cancelled so we spent 1 week hiking and doing some trail runs to prepare the legs for what was to come since we come from flat land with no hills and it makes a big difference on the legs when going up and down hill for the 1st time in a while.
The 1st week helped with getting the legs used to going up and down steep climbs and i would recommend something like this before the race to help ease that soreness on the legs.
Race details and insights for anyone who might be considering this race:
Note: if your new to trail running start a little bit at the back so as when it comes to the 1st hill you can choose to walk and not get in the way of the faster more experienced runners. It's less stressful this way haha!
The 1st 8km from Neustift to Volderauhof is good to get started in the race. There are a couple small climbs in the beginning but a few good km's of "flattish" running in the woods and downhill. This is where you should try and get a good time in the beginning because later on you will need the extra time.
The hardest part for me was Volderauhof to Falbesoner Nockalm. This was a steep climb through the woods which was followed by a technical descent with tree roots, rocks, small pathways. I took my time, like many others, going down the part of the course.
From Falbesoner Nockalm to Mutterberg ran through Wilde Wasser Weg which is an up and down profile. In between i ran when it was flat, but mostly wanted to keep my energy for the last big climb from Mutterberg to the Glacier as it would only go up from there.
Mutterberg to Dresdner Hütte followed a zig zag path under the Gondel and from my perspective was not too hard (not as hard as the Nockalm climb). We arrived at Dresdner Hütte, refueled, and set off to the Eigrat Bergstation. The route this year had to be changed at this point due ot heavy snow still on the mountains and therefore we took the gravel road by Gamgarten. This was also a pretty steep climb throughout but again from my perspective not as bad as the Nockalm climb. Once we reached the Eisgrat station then we had 1.5km up the glacier to the finish line.
The last 1.5km along the soft snow was at times hard, but the people from before had created a kind of path so it was easier to step in their footsteps and make it to the top.
After 6hrs and 53/56mins we made it to the top ane crossed the finish line. It was cold when we got to the top and quickly changed out of the sweaty clothes.
Overall it was an amazing experience and I look forward to more in the future.
