This is not a contradiction The first ayah is concerning not forcing non Muslims to enter into Islam The second ayah is concerning hypocrites who claim to be Muslims but are fighting against and opposing the believers. If you read the same ayaah and the ayah after it explains clearly how they can avoid being fought against. How is warfare in the Old and New Testament? 3 Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass. 1 Samuel 15:3 17 Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him. 18 But all the women children, that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves.
