The key to chess success is patience. This is not just when going through a platueau but also when playing the game. Most of us want to do stuff NOW. "I want to checkmate NOW". "I want to attack the queen NOW". "I want to lash out NOW" This mindset doesn't take into account multiple things. 1. Your opponent is also playing the game. Patience is key when trying to understand what your opponent is doing. 2. A game is won whether it take 10 moves or 100 moves. Taking unnecessary risk for beautiful attacks only will hinder your progress. 3. One mistake can cost the game. Although this is in relation to the number 2, it is important to emphasize this. If you throw your pieces and expect your opponent to do nothing, then you will lose a lot of games. 4. The long "dull" game is perhaps the soul of chess. Although attacking is fun, the slow long positional struggle is what most people think of when it comes to a game between two equal level players. The battle of the minds. The slow buildup of the position. Even great attackers like Tal understood such concepts. 5. And the last one I will discuss is related to Tal in a sense. Most of us are not Tal, we are not Morphy, we don't have the combinational awareness to play like them. But fret not, that doesn't mean you can't become good at chess. Or even great. Sure having tactical awareness is one thing, however, there were plenty of top chess players that were lacking in the pure tactical field, and were able to find their own way. In other words, be patient, learn from the greats and be honest with yourself. Look at strong players and try to find who resonates with your style. Not what you want your style to be, but your individual style. Of course, this is after you gain the tactical vision necessary to truly understand the game. If you are 800 or even 1500 in online chess you should really just focus on studying puzzles. And to gain pattern recognition. Repeat puzzles you got wrong 10 or so times. But even so, this methodical approach requires patience as well XP. If you read my ramble, congrats you have proven that you have some patience. I felt it necessary to discuss this important yet elusive topic in the chess area.

Nice vid! Below my level but still interesting. I bet there are lots of players rated under 1000 wishing there was more like this. A real game, rather than just showing how the pieces move. It's challenging when your audience covers the full range of abilities. Certain KZbinrs - one minute they're explaining the en-passant rule and the next, they're zooming through the moves. I watched, awaiting some great enlightenment at the end about how to get out of the rabbit hole, but alas, it didn't happen!

15:03 "Black played Nxf3" This is a good move but not the best one, which was Qb5, and the position is completely winning for black. I think the biggest problem for White was that White has never considered what moves the opponent has. Like in case of Na4, it may appear as a good move, because it protects pawn on b2 and attacks the queen, but if you think where the queen may go, you are immediately realize that Na4 is a mistake.

funny you start about skincare though. I've been struggling with pretty severe ecema the past years. And I've been treating with triamcinolonacetonide, not sure whether it translates right, but basically it fixes the ecema very effectively in shorterm, yet in longterm it makes it worse, I've read that last week, after a year of use, so that sucked to acknowledge. So the past week I quit using the medicine and started on this biological butter. Like I put it on, but still after like 2 hours my skin was all dried up again, so kept putting it on, buttering my face pretty much constantly preventing it from drying out. Like my skin has been hurting all week so much, literally hurting, yet now it's finally clearing, so a lot less effective than the medicine, but biological so hopefully this will not make it worse, or get rid of it entirely

Just wanted to impart the "right word." A rabbit hole in metaphor is like watching one episode of a show and then binging the whole season, down the rabbit hole. When you're stuck, you're in a rut (where Im from)
@stevezilla5230

Concerning the English idiom, a rabbit hole is distraction. An example would be 'I went on the computer to study but I went down a rabbit hole of watching chess videos.' Stuck in a rut is a phrase that would work better. A rut usually a occurs where there is consistent wear in a specific place and it creates a divot that things can then get stuck in. An example would be "I play chess everyday, but I'm stuck in a rut of playing the Botez Gambit.'

Can confirm rabbit hole is a word, or phrase. Probably not quite the right use here... unless a person has gone down a rabbit hole of really bad chess habits. Possibly 'stuck in a rut' is a better phrase. Re the bishop exchange. There are 4 primary ways of dealing with bd6. 1) e3 defending with the pawn, 2) ne5 blocking it (and potentially initiating an exchange) 3) bg3 rocking the white bishop back back which is my favorite because it can set up a really cool trap and fast checkmate. And 4) bxd6 which is objectively the worst way to deal with this threat. It simply allows the black queen to be developed, so while the exchange is equal, the positions are not. Which is worse after this exchange.

One-size-fits-all doesn't usually work in chess. If they are better than you overall, then simplifying to an end game where they are likely far better doesn't necessarily help. If end games are your best skill then it's a good strategy. For most players, that just creates a slower loss rather than more winning chances.

@@jays100 - I only do it because the Queen is so deadly and I know they are going to rape me with it if they are too far above my skill level. All the other pieces are easier for me to visualize the lines and tactics.

I think most beginners don't really understand the value of a single pawn. In beginner levels that should be the focus in the game, trying to hang on to your pawns.

Is there supposed to be more video at the end here? It felt as if it cut off at a random point

I just got someone the dirty way tho. He's totally winning, but I can keep checking him for 3 minutes on end until his time runs out, so yeah, they never draw lol

For me i enjoy being a novice and playing other novice players. Chess is fun and I enjoy the game but when I watch masters play taking 10-20 sometimes 30 minutes to move because they have to calculate 10 moves ahead seems like a chore. Every game pros play the same 2-3 openings which consist of the first 7-8 moves basically automatic then it comes down to who wants to sacrifice first then you start actually playing and using strategy.

You don't watch much pro chess or don't understand it if you do because there are very very few pros who always play the same two openings, let alone "Every game pros play". Additionally, most pros know more than the first 7-8 moves of theory in an average game.

This was me for the longest time! I’ve pushed pass 500 by reviewing every game I play and gaining confidence on typical openings (also checking out any openings i havent seen before after I encounter it in a game)

Perpetual 300-400 player here. I castle 99% of the time and I get mated a LOT. Diagonals and knight/queen.

You have to listen to her thought process. There are no simple answers in chess like "Play D4 on move one" or "just castle" to win. If you don't understand where you are strong vs weak, what their responses to your move could be, why you don't need to be afraid of certain moves, etc then you are missing key fundamentals to the game.
