Күн бұрын

In chapter two, the weather gets in the way of our plans and grounds us on a mountain overnight. We then find ourselves stuck on a rock in the middle of nowhere for 24 HOURS due to poor visibility. A major headwind has us questioning our ability to make it to our destination before running out of fuel.
We took a MASSIVE cross country helicopter trip in August where we flew our helicopter, the Millennial Falcon, back to our Canadian home province Newfoundland and Labrador. We will be releasing episodes of Cold Island, A Helicopter Travel Series every Sunday and Wednesday until Nov 13th! This is our largest video project (and helicopter trip) to date. Hope you enjoy it!

So glad you guys made it - so far - and this is a terribly exciting story! Also - so glad that Chris is a thoughtful and deliberate pilot. This is as educational as it is informative! WOW! Great drone flying also - seeing the chopper from all those angles is so neat!! Can. Not. Wait.

This is honestly some of my favorite stuff you two have done. Seriously, major props to how this was orchestrated, presented, structured.. another redundant word. I foolishly watched these backwards.. but I'm so pleased. I get that trips like these are hectic and honestly unpredictable; but the way this was planned and presented (as you're already teasing footage even in the first video just introducing the idea of the trip) was done SO well. That, and amidst the chaos of landing on rocks in dense fog, private property ski resorts, you still captured things in a way that present the scenarios, in (dare I say) a cinematic way, and kept up with the pacing while keeping information flowing. Not once was I bored. If this were an hour long, edited the way it was, I would've still been glued. Nonetheless, looking forward to more.

Fellow helicopter pilot here. Nice job being well prepared, making safe choices and having a backup plan for every contingency. I've never had to camp out, but I have set the helicopter down in a random field to let a storm pass. There's nothing like a long long cross country flight in a helicopter. It's always a learning experience. Play it safe and live to fly another day! Thanks for sharing.

Oh Becky look at you! So comfortable helping with navigation timing and getting use to terms like closing the flightplan and stuff! You are getting the aviation bug as well! You know what will be awesome? If after this trip you started your training as well, BUT in an airplane. If you still have Matt's weather module you can ask him if he can take you on a short flight on his Bonanza so you can choose to do the training or not. Chris on a helicopter and Becky on an airplane.. Just think about it.. :D

Last Friday night we had a mentoring session in our town by our Civil Aviation Safety Authority on enhancing better piloting skills and I think we pretty much covered your whole flight, things like "How many crashes start with, the flight was delayed" we studied a VFR piloted helicopter, that landed in a field due to fog, waited 40 minutes and then proceeded to fly back into the fog plowing into a hill killing 3 people, fuel reserves, the need to call mayday on less than 30 minutes reserve, doing what you need to to get the aircraft on the ground when low on fuel and having a plan D, E and F when you can't get the weather the normal way. Well done on your airmanship Chris, putting safety as an absolute first, proud of you. PS Awesome series

I love the mentality that you took here. I feel like not taking the" it's only five mins mentality " is pretty key in a place like Newfoundland. Maybe even cultural from a sailing perspective. Letting the weather dictate the schedule. I feel like the it's only five mins people don't really last in Newfoundland lol. I would of made the same choice.
