Such a nice group of guys at the Black Hen and so welcoming. Dean, great job getting Nessie out of the mud. I was worried there for awhile. Nala seems to adapt to any new surrounding. Such a happy and inquisitive cat. The houseboat looks great.

Hi Dean! Keep a small bucket of Kitty litter for just this reason. It will dry out the immediate mudd under the tires and provide traction!

Also may want to invest in all terrain tires and a solar powered heat source. Yes, it would change the classic appearance of Nessie's look, but may pay off in the long run.

We don't have much mud in southern California, but we do have plenty of sand. Two strips of carpet, app. one foot wide and eight feet long, have gotten me out. Roll them up and they store easily. This trick may work for mud, too. Take care, and kiss Nala for us.

Here's a tip Dean, if you can find some car mats that you can keep rolled up in the van you should be able to put them under your tires and get out of not too deep mud. Also your branch idea is ideal. Keep up the good fight. Come to Texas, we have 3 cats and a spare room.

Good self-rescue!!! Here in Northern New England we are well acquainted with the 5th “season”….spring, summer, fall, winter and MUD season. It is a force to be reckoned with and respected as it can swallow a car before breakfast! I’d recommend 2 pieces of kit since you have a van…. Something called a “come-along” which is basically a hand-powered ratchet attached to a long, steel cable with a hook on the end. One or two can save a solo traveler from a variety of unforeseen accidental adventures. With one you can pull massive trees out of the way or pull vehicles out from the suction of mud and snow if there are stout trees nearby. The other suggestion is a good quality folding saw. Cutting wood with an ax is OK, but a saw is more efficient and less time consuming. Not as good a weapon as an ax though! 😊. Glad you made it out and amazing that you did it without help and without squashing the camera!! Well done, you!

Hey Dean, you should invest in a had winch. Nessie seems light enough that you could hook up the winch to a tree and crank away. It may be slow, but it could always be quite useful in a pinch!
