Stuck socket in cylinder removal (3k views!!!)

IT IS UNLIKELY TO COME OUT THE FIRST TRY. It took me 4 attempts before it came out. This remedy is almost guaranteed to work and if it fails, keep trying until it pops out. It took me 4 tries until it actually came out. And yes, I did try to use a magnet, that’s the first thing I tried. The good thing about this remedy is you can keep at it with nothing to lose. Make sure you coat the tip of the extension (all four walls, even the little silver ball) with a strong adhesive and slowly push it into the stuck socket to prevent glue from getting into your cylinder. I used the wrong socket (16mm instead of 14mm) and got it stuck. I sprayed some wd40 down there, let it sit overnight, then cleaned the top of the socket with an alcohol rag aided with a screwdriver, used crazy glue on the extension, let that sit together for 30 mins, and had just enough clearance to slowly slip down strips of gorilla tape down to the sides of the socket and used a thin pick (don't use a file or ice cream bar it could break and fall down) to press the tape against the socket and extension bar. It took some patience to get the tape down. Then I wiggled the bar in a circular motion and it took about 10 seconds for it to pop out. I was so relieved, I thought I had really messed up and was going to have to get it towed to a shop. I saw videos of people taking off their heads or drilling the spark plug, screw that.

YESS SIRRR I USED STEEL JB WELD 3800 OR MORE PSI STRENGTH ON A 1/14 SOCKET ATTACHMENT LET IT DRIED FOR 12HRS THEN SPRAYED WD-40 INTO HOLE LET IT SET A MIN THEN GOT DRILL AND GAVE IT FULL POWER AND PULLED HARD IT CAME STRAIGHT OUT THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE IDEAL

I did this on a 2017 Hyndai Elantra. I got the small slide hammer from Harbor Freight. The hook attachment fits through the 3/8 hole and will catch just enough on a craftsman deep socket that when you slide the hammer up a couple of times it will pop it out. This was a good fix though

Meow meow GTI 2002 socket stuck in the hole exact same problem.. friend lend me the spark plug socket with was the bigger size not the smaller size. And I stuck a wrong one in their normal socket.. SouNd cheers mate bro dude..

very helpful. One time in summer, one of my ignition coils got too hot and swelled up stuck into the cylinder. Would not come out at all. Took it to a shop and he had to fight with it to where only the head came off with the body still inside. Thank god the coil was rubber and could be cut out. Your situation is all metal though. scary…

What’s the screwdriver hack?

Screwdriver hack is when you burn the tip of the screwdriver and bend it to a “U” shape so that it acts like a hook, and pulls out anything stuck in tight spaces (ie. cylinders, crevices, pipes)

geez dude, this literally just happened to me. you wouldnt happen to be in toronto would you? lol. now my car is in some industrial business area cuz i cant work in my condo parking garage.....gotta figure out how to get this socket out of the cylinder.

Unfortunately, I’m 8 hours away in PA, USA, haha. Is the socket that’s stuck a 1/2 inch or 3/4? Regardless, you should already have the extension because the cylinders are deep. Grab same crazy glue, coat the tip of the extension and let it sit for 10 minutes. It’s better if the engine is cold. But, don’t panic and have patience if you can’t get the things now. It’s an easy fix, unless it was hammered in.... but, you got this. Good luck!
