Hi stu, great peace of advice you wrote up, life can be difficult at times, but there is great advice out there, once you surround yourself in good people it helps a lot, I am a bricklayer over 20 years here in Ireland, and know A lot of bricklayers, currently working in Dublin for sisk building apartment's all brickwork, I must say your brickwork is excellent, and you're apprentice if he takes your advice, keep himself on the straight and narrow, he will have a brilliant future a head of him. Keep up the good work. 👍

I stumbled across your channel by a coincidence... I just want to say your bricklaying looks more like an art than a trade job. Really neat and precise. Well done to you and your team! Just a quick question, is this the best type of insulation to apply for the walls, or that one which is more like pressed foam better option? All videos I have seen from you use this wool like one. Thanks

Stu. This might come in handy mate. Where you put in the temporary brick for the window sill, stick a 10mm pice of installation on top of the muck. It makes taking out the temporary brick alot easier, no need for a hammer, just a little wiggle and it pops out.

As Richard says, depends on the ty[e of brick and the weather. Typically though not less than half an hour later if the bricks are taking the moisture, and although I never used to time it, not more than maybe an hour and a half if memory serves. As I say I never really used to time it. What I did was to try say, one perp joint or something if it looked dry enough, and if it wasn't and it would be a bit messy so leave it half an hour or an hour more and try another one. There was one time years and years ago when I built a gable end on my own garage and it was a really wet November day , and the cement remained so wet that I wasn't able to point it for 2 days!!! That's really extreme though! The work was fine though, mortar went perfectly hard alright as it was brand new. It was a seriously cold and foggy week that was.

There SHOULD be a LARGE air-space GAP in-between the face of the cavity-wall insulation BATTs and the OUTER WALL inside the cavity ; this ALSO includes an air-space GAP in-between the face of the cavity-wall insulation batts and the cavity-wall-tie drip point-which should be in the centre of the cavity. Ask N.V.Q. City & Guilds BRICKWORK teachers for PROOF of this ! With the cavity-wall being bridged with insulation (insulation touching the outer walls inside the cavity), damp will travel from the outer wall through the bridging insulation to the inner wall !

Why does the mortar become more wet than it was out the mixer. Must be because the mortar absorbs the moisture in the brick.
