Yeah, I didn’t believe the government would pay for my student loans, and I sure as heck wasn’t gonna rely on them. During the pause, it wouldn’t even allow me to make payments even if I wanted to, so I saved and once it resumed I put all that money I saved towards it. I’m way ahead on payments just from doing that, but I REFUSE to still be in debt this time next year. I won’t have it! Thankful to you, Dave, and your whole team! 👏🏾👏🏾 I’ll be signing up for my debt free scream early of next year 🤞🏾

I was one of the poor saps that paid student loans for 20+ years (by income driven repayment) and they were forgiven...that being said I paid so much in interest in that 20 years, interest was two times more than my initial bill...waiting for someone else to help doesn't save you.

There is no financial education in this country so how do you expect 18 year olds to understand things like compound interests, capitalization, inflation, wage growth, time value of money, and demand for their particular degree after graduation to be able to accurately calculate their chance of being able to pay back their loans? Most people's parents aren't even financially literate and we as a country push college as the something every teenager should aspire to. Then we're surprised when we're in a student loan crisis.

My son (just turned 19) graduated HS and started with community college (2 years tuition free in cali). I was worried about him "missing out on the college experience ". He said "I dont want loans". His argument wins. I'm an immigrant, came to US as an adult with no English. So had a long road. Graduated from community college as an RN, got my BSN while working without taking loans. Currently getting masters and paying as I go, no loans. There are different ways to do it besides the traditional "go to college, take out loans ".

Never had student debt myself. The Navy paid 75% of my tuition for my Bachelors and Master degrees. I am currently working a second job, making $500/week, so we can pay for our daughters college in cash. She lives at home and goes to community college for the first two years. That will be $10k + books. Year 3 and 4 will be at the local state college. It will be $12k a year plus books. I made our daughter get her drivers license at 17. She commutes to college 25 miles away twice a week. We bought her an $8k car. 2013 Nissan Altima with a salvage title due to hail damage. 32k miles and fully loaded. Runs like new. I am guessing with tuition and books we will pay less than $40k for a four year education. We are paying for college not the college experience. Now just imagine if our daughter had applied for scholarships. Please don't tell me that college can't be paid for in cash. You have to be creative and patient.

Short answer, negative amortization. You end up accruing more debt even though you consistently pay. I have no idea why it's even legal because it's illegal on normal mortgages as that came after the 07/08 crash. In other words, do you want to pay a consistent amount every month and show nothing for it after 5 or 10 years?

I have the $0 repayment. I still plan on paying tho. I called my servicer to get an understanding on the interest and to see if I’d be penalized for paying on the $0 payment plan. So if you use that to benefit your budget then you can stay on top of your interest. Still work it into the debt snowball. I think it’s only bad if you don’t pay anything more than just the interest. Make sure you’re paying down on the principal too

The PSLF program was fixed last year. Many of those people waiting to be forgiven have been forgiven at this point. It's a legitimate plan for those who work in public service.

I heard that too. The issue is that PSLF goes against the Ramsey model. Dave and his team will not likely ever see it as legitimate.

One of the challenges is that some people are so committed to PSLF that they more than pay for the loans in lower income at a qualified job, when they could have paid it off faster earning more at a nonqualified job

I'm thankful that my wife and I started implementing the baby steps BEFORE her first day of school. I knocked out a third of the loan debt the very moment the student aid website had a login for her. We're going for that debts throat!

I love watching you, Dave, and I appreciate your financial expertise. However, I guess I'm in the 1% because last month, I received student loan forgiveness under Biden's PSLF program. Thank you, Jesus!!💛🙌🏾 I"ve been so overwhelmed with emotions since I found out! I have been an educator for over 10 years and am so grateful to be debt free. There are so many others like me. It's not a joke.🎊

PLSF is being fixed now. The numbers he used are old numbers. Without providing the proper context for his statistic, he sounds like he is bashing the program for his benefit.

I am an HR manager for the state. I have been signing off on those PLSF form for our employees for years. I do know a few folks whose loans were forgiven. But not enough to give the PLSF folks praise.

As of 8/2023…804,000 student loans were forgiven equaling $39 billion of debt relief. Shame on Dave Ramsey for speaking in hyperbole and making it sound like President Biden didn’t come through on multi-levels for those with student loan debt. Freaking people out by saying they’ll need to work 5 jobs by October to start paying their debt back. Why not mention Biden’s S.A.V.E. Program, which will allow repayment based on how much you claim you earn on your taxes? Word has it, under SAVE - Most students will be paying 1/2 what they had to pay under Trump. Some who make less than $32,00/year will be asked to pay $0.00/month. Also Under the SAVE Program, interest can not compound. So don’t panic. As of August, 2023 Everyone The 10k-20k loan forgiveness program got torpedoed due to anti-lower and middle class Republican politics, Big Student loan lenders like Mohela, and the Republican conservative Supreme Court. Dave forgets to mention this. Shame on Dave and his right wing conservative politics. Stop the hysteria for click bait.

Only thing a disagree with is the 401K because 1st If your job is meeting is matching that instantly doubles your money, which you can take a loan from 401k on your student loans and have double the money to pay more (That’s what I did, I put in 5k in 401k. My job matched now total of 10k ….. Than asked for a loan paid on principle amount of SL) 2nd 401k lowers your yearly taxable income (more depending on your income bracket) 3rd Getting a additional gains from the fund it is invested in, now that the market is back up 🙌🏽
