Working Guy : My sense is that she is young, and was slightly panicked, initially not understanding what it was she had done for her T/O clearance to be rescinded, and, while stopping to copy the number for the tower, she can clearly be heard exclaiming, “Oh my God!” ... a pretty good indication she suddenly realized her transgression, instantly felt embarrassed and ashamed, did not want to get in trouble for the mistake, and likely worried if it might destroy her dream of a career in aviation. It’s a teachable moment, which galvanizes the need to be meticulous. I hope she is very resilient, and does well solving her dreams. We obviously all want to fly knowing that every other pilot is just as meticulous to the discipline of aviation as we are, but remember what it was like when we first began, and encourage those who make mistakes to learn from it, move beyond it, and never give up.

I've made plenty of mistakes, but not this bad and nothing that put people's lives in danger. Runway incursion avoidance is a big one. Ya gotta have your head in the game, this is a potential if someone's on short final.
@bogdan_n
@bogdan_n 4 жыл бұрын
@@ItsAllAboutGuitar How did this in any way put people's lives in danger? Were you there when it happened? Did she just nicked the hold short line (which is still an offense, but that line is at least 50ft away from the runway), or did she actually entered the runway, getting in the path of incoming aircrafts? Or maybe her mistake could scare incoming aircraft pilots into shock which could lead to a crash?
@Thillith
@Thillith 4 жыл бұрын
@@bogdan_n As stated by VASaviaton we have no data on how much she crossed the line. Could be a meter could be right next to runway. But as incoming aircraft canceled his own approach and declared a go around because of traffic on the runway she obviously went a lot over the line.
@bogdan_n
@bogdan_n 4 жыл бұрын
@@Thillith legally speaking, if an aircraft is even 1 inch on the hold short line, it occupies the runway, so no inbound aircraft is allowed to land, but that doesn't necessarily mean that people's lives are in danger. It's like a STOP sign on the road, placed 20m before the intersection (because that's the only place it could have been put). Legally, if you don't stop before the sign, it's a violation, but, practically, you don't put anyone in danger. And a few months ago, Premier1Driver has been reported to the FAA by someone who saw in one of his videos that he called "runway vacated" on the CTAF before actually passing the line, on an UNCONTROLLED AIRFIELD!!! I don't know if that dumbass reported the other pilot who lined up on the runway when P1D was on his landing roll, too. Being current (or legal) is one thing, being proficient is 'a bit' more than that.
@kikastra
@kikastra Жыл бұрын
I don't think that the animation is accurate as to how far she crossed the line, as the animation shows her barely past it. I highly doubt her position depicted in the animation would cause the other pilot to go around. I would say she was was either on the runway or very close to it.

Yeah. If that had been me, I'd have taxied back to the hangar and put it up for the day in order to get my head right. Everyone has bad days, which is probably what it was for this obviously student pilot, but a bad day is not normally one you want to fly on. Crossing the hold short bars can happen to anyone. I almost did it once because I let my foot up on the brake a bit while looking at the checklist (my plane doesn't have a functional parking brake). But crossing the bars, not understanding ATC, and not understanding the error you made are all red flags that it's just not your day and maybe that some additional dual training is required.

Nah, you gots to get back on the horse. When I was on a solo flight in a helicopter, I over-reved the throttle and the governor cut the engine and I had my first solo autorotation. After I landed in the grass and shut everything down, my instructor flew over in another helicopter and told me to continue. I got back in and everything was uneventful. This was in 1969, and our class had some of the first modified Mattel Messerschmidts with the engine governors. They were wicked and really slammed the throttle on the collective. I heard rumors of a student pilot crashing and burning when he had too hard a grip on throttle and broke his wrist when the governor kicked in. Lots of incidents and fatalities in Army primary flight school. One student died when he entered ground resonance and ship vibrated apart. Another student and instructor died when student applied wrong pedal on an autorotation. But overall the training was excellent but not for the faint hearted. It helped me get through a tour in one piece. I felt confident in combat. Less so for politics and military strategy. Both got a lot of us killed.

There is an unmentioned factor here. One plane already initiated a go-around. That means that plane is now climbing out on runway heading at TOGA power, instead of landing, and casting vortices down towards the runway. It's not safe to allow anyone to takeoff immediately when such conditions exist over the runway. A few minutes are needed for the wake to clear.

@@mynameisray I think you're missing the point. The transmissions were recorded from outside the airport by someone with an airband receiver, which just happened to be within range of the tower, but not the plane. The tower is high off the ground (along with its antennas), therefore you clearly can receive tower signals from a good distance away from the airport. Radio transmissions from the plane however, at least while on the ground, will not travel nearly as far (think obstacles like buildings, hills, trees and such blocking the signal). From the perspectives of the plane and the tower, their transmissions to each other will come through crystal clear - no radio issues. But for the listener (making the recordings), the signal from the plane is very weak and unintelligible, but if they moved closer to the airport they would be able to hear the plane much better.

Well, ATC nor pilots are the final decision in what happened. The investigative body does that, so it could come down to a number of things. Was she on the bars, what she fully past them, was the incoming pilots being overzealous and felt encroached upon? That's why the experienced people are there and working people through it. People like you who pass judgement at the moment and call it final to say you can do no more because of a mistake are a problem in aviation. The recordings that *we* are not what *they* hear, thankfully! They are poor because the receiver used to record is probably a bit away from the airport. If you listen to ATC comms in cockpit videos they are always quite clear. (As a non-pilot, it can still be hard to understand everything, but not really due to poor audio quality.)

That's a perfect example of how air traffic controllers are not out to get us pilots, and for us not to be worried about calling "the number." He just wanted to know if she recognized her mistake for safety reasons. KMYF is a big training airfield so I'm sure ATC has more patience than most.

Unfortunately, some (GA) pilots think that ATCs are some kind of wardens who are there just to kill their joy of flying, and don't get it that "cleared to/for...[insert action]..." doesn't mean "I, the allmighty ATC am in a good mood today, so I'll allow you to...[insert action]", but more on the lines of "I, the ATC, guarantee that, as far as I'm concerned, you, the pilot can [insert action] SAFELY, without others interfering".

I teach a course called Theory of Knowledge and there is a concept called the Curse of Knowledge. It is a cognitive bias that suggests that we have a hard time understanding why someone doesn't know what we know. In other words, once you know something, and are proficient at it, it's very easy to forget what it is like to NOT know that thing. I have to remind myself of this when teaching students--it might be the fiftieth time I've talked about this concept, but for them, it's the first. Part of the learning process.

For years I've tried to share my first impression with companies and other entities. It's amazing how when I tell them what my experience was, they ignore that and just try to defend the way they do things. They don't seem to get the concept that they can't understand what somebody's first impression is because they already know everything. It can be very frustrating when someone is seemingly uninterested in creating a better experience for newbies.

This happened to me on my first night flight a few years ago, but they were fully on the runway. I was on final and noticed some strobe lights near the threshold, took a moment to sort out that they were not runway end lights. Just as I started to say "I think that's a plane" to my instructor, the Tower cuts in "456 GO AROUND!" Just strobes, I didn't see any nav, beacon, or anti collision lights. Not to close, I still had a 100-200 feet of altitude. It was also my first time at a towered airport.

Before slinging around negativity to this student, we all got to learn our things in one way or another. Making mistakes is part of it. Just like driving a car for the first time and you didn't press in the clutch far enough whilst trying to shift. It happens, it slaps your face, but it'll teach you immediately on what to do next time. She's a student pilot for a reason, I'm certain the tower is aware of the fact she's a student pilot, probably flew out there with an instructor and she may very well be familiar with the area. Don't judge so harshly, if you get your fingers cut off for every single mistake you've made in your life, you'd probably have no arms left...

Barely left comments on KZbin, but I have to say that ATCs at KMYF are one of the best in the field. As an international student who have been having a training at KMYF since last year, I can’t express my appreciation enough for them. I had had difficulty in communicating through the radio and also had a fear of talking to ATC, but they were always there being patient and calm no matter how I messed up. That doesn’t mean unprofessional as you can see in the video. They always do their best on their duty but in a manner of extremely considering. Thanks for them I always take off with confidence and that means a lot when I’m flying in SoCal, one of the busiest airspace in the country as far as I know. Feel sorry for what happened to the student pilot but I’m sure that everyone including myself learns and grows a step forward from mistakes so hope she would just consider this as an epic lesson out of the classroom!
