This poor lad is clearly going through some tough stuff at the moment and probably doesn't have the nouse to process his feelings in a healthy way. The teacher can only really make suggestions and often they take the form of vague things like 'we can't do this can we' or 'I think you should try smiling'. BTW studies prove that if your force a smile you can trick your brain into being happy.
