In this life video you can see how I got o n e capstan motor running. When I started, I did not know if I would have success, what would finally happen, and was lucky enough to catch the right "aha"-moments.
To get the clue, you may jump to here: 3:20
• Studer A721 or A710, P... (please copy this link by hand and open in new tab!)
And here in a second clip of this "life-reapair" we see how the second one comes into operation:
• Studer A721, A710, Par... (please copy this link by hand and open in new tab!)
At 6.09 • Studer A721, A710, Par... (please copy this link by hand and open in new tab!)
you can see the right capstan (from the front it would be the left one) is making a t i n y move.
When I later touched it, it did n o t move any more.
They key to understand is, to give it a push within the second you switch the recorder on. YOU MAY EVEN BE ABLE TO DO SO FROM THE FRONT, WTHOUT OPENING THE COVER !!!
This can give a s t i f f capstan the little support it needs to come back to action, to spin again constantly when the mashine is on.
You may need to repeat this operation several times, until the capstan is spinning constantly, and a cassette is playing again, as it should.
If you are lucky to get the cassette deck back into operation, you should at best give some good oil to the bearing.
In case you cannot do this yourself, a skilled technican can do this, who is used to make repair on HiFi-equipment.
In any case it would be very good if not neccessarily, for best performance, to give the casssette recorder to a technican used to service this kind of mashines.
At best give him the tape(s) you usually use for recording, so the technican can adjust your deck to the tapes.
Remember: A Studer A721 is a device about 35 years of age, either being user standing on a shelf.
When do you pretend your car needed a service?
So - right, such units are buildt to last, but needed a service after some 30 years, o.k.?
This is what you should your technican do:
cleaning the whole inner sections
Recapping
complete overhaul of the mechanical part, taking the capstan selection out, giving it new fat and new oil
change the capstan rolls, if needed (there are no belts in this unit)
check the keys, clean them.
check the adjustments according to Studer specifications, at best with the tape you use.
replacement of the display; this usually gets quite dark after a while. The green display is the original color, but blue can also be nice, this is pers. taste.
get an operation manual, and check how to operate the deck. The computer--based alignement
is quite simple and explained here on KZbin: Choose cassette type; press pause + record;
press "Aling" button; after some 2 minutes, when alignement done, go back to start.
Maxell XL II and XL II-S are very good for the deck, there are plenty of them around. Used ones will do for personal listening.
In case you did not have any other unit at hand, a well aligned A721 could be used to master your home performances, in case you know how to set up all the rest well.
Tape costs are close to zero, and the tape last for decades, same as the 1/4-inch tapes.
In Germany we have several people who do such jobs for the Studer A721.
I can recommend:
Sandro Rudolph / Brühl, Germany
Tel.: 06202-9514259
and
audioaddict.de of Johannes Schulte,
Bielefeld.
Both Sandro Rudolf as well as Johannes Schulte are my first choice when it comes to Revox/ Studer tape recorders. They can certainly also deal with EU-customers or maybe even offer worldwide support; just ask.
