New York's greatest DJ/producer ever, Roy Thode, introduced this strange song from Viola Wills onto the dance floor of The Saint dome, New York's greatest Disco, and took it to the top record of the year (I paid $88 for my copy at the store where top New York DJs found their next big thing). Hard to describe the "unannounced" white light beaming down on this Nubian Queen dressed all in white, as her dome panel raised while her small stage thrust forward into the room as she sang the opening beats of "If You Could Read My Mind." End of song, the light vanishes, as she receeds back into the darkness, the panel drops back into the dome, and Roy, without missing a beat, played on. OMG did that really happen?

New York Gays "invented" Disco to suit their needs, tastes, habits, preferences. It was a sex-driven, usually anonymous, and drug-infused, celebration of our newly declared freedom after the Stonewall riots in June 1969. The 1970s were the only decade Gay men were able to "indulge" in all things wild, no constraints. It was a gay Disneyland, a Dyonician orgy of debauchery. If you were there, you would have loved it. It was to die for. And that's what we did, beginning 1981. From so much craziness and fun, the Gay decade turned into the Gay holocaust, overnight. If you had been there, you would have gone into shock. It was not a time to dance. There was nothing to celebrate. The music continue but no longer catering to the staunch Gay crowd. You could say, and I do, it was "the day the music died." And the heart and soul of our Community started vanishing before our eyes. Gloria recorded "I Will Survive," but a great number of us didn't. Disco evolved into the hetero Saturday Night Fever era, a pale imitation of what had gone before. A decade after, with gays no longer dominating music, the angry black guys from war-torn Bronx, NYC, "invented" Rap. The day the music stopped. What was lost was a sense of joy. There was nothing joyful about Rap. It was doom & gloom

Grew up 3 houses down from a disco in the late 70's early 80's, went to sleep every weekend with the thump, thump, thump. I miss it. Don't worry Kevin, disco never died, they just renamed it dance music. Any club you go into is going to have disco remixed

Studio was a gay club, conceived and run by gay guys. The infamous velvet rope at the door was there to keep out the straight "bridge & tunnel" trash that became the Saturday Night Fever crowd. Gays were having fun fun fun dancing and fucking the night away. That boisterous blast of sex and drugs and fun fun fun attracted the rich and famous folks who had nothing like our gay clubs to explore their pent-up wildness of the day. Because of its location in Midtown Manhattan, the original TV studio #54 became the straight crowd's Disco of choice (Gay Discos did not embrace Straight People. Discos were our escape from oppressive straight people.) So, this gay-owned club was straight until midnight, when those patrons petered out and went away. Gay New York Discos didn't get going until 1:00am, or later. So we naturally reclaimed Studio after 1:00am. Gays kept Studio a destination for sex, drugs, rock & roll, glamorous temple of all things "bad." Diana Ross had no problem with gays, Henry Kissinger could care less, the Mayor of New York thought it was a great business. They were the ones in the News. Studio closed 3 years later. Steve Rubell, best chum of Calvin Klein, was found guilty of money fraud and possession of tons of drugs (tokens for the rich & famous) hidden in the ceiling of his office. He went to prison. Studio shut it's doors. It might be interesting to note that Studio 54 was not a club of choice for the beautiful, hard core, gay crowd. Studio late-night male denizens were the kind---closet cases---who always travelled with heavily perfumed girl friends, fag hags. Gay dancers didn't care for perfume of any kind. Or girls. Male sweat was the desired fragrance of the great gay palaces, home base to the super-charged homos of New York, who scared hell out of closet queens.

What a disappointment this is! You have butchered this track, totally cutting out ULTRA NATE's segment, she is the main strong vocal on this track, and you relegated her to backing vocals. If you are going to re make something, stick to the original vocals. Also, the artist listings at the beginning of the track is incorrectly ordered.

Disgusting, bordering on blasphemous. To take such a classic folk guitar song and turn it into this crap..? When people say some songs just shouldn't be redone, this is an example of what they're talking about. But hey what do I know? Just my opinion.
@gintasindreika9336 жыл бұрын
Russ Wayne: If you never danced to disco in the '80s leave your comments to yourself. This remix touched millions of people, many of whom still have memories of the magical time of "Saturday Night Fever", when we were young and idealistic. Lightfoot's lyrics weren't changed, they were enhanced with the high energy beat.
@texasrwayne316 жыл бұрын
Debauchery, sex, drugs, immoral behavior, T&A...But you were young and idealistic right? And I am sure that is what Gordon had in mind for this song when he wrote it inspired by his own personal real life divorce.
