Studio 7, New Instrument Unboxing, Rev. Elaine Plays “O Christmas Tree”
The only exposure I’ve had with this instrument was at a relative’s house when I was three years old. I found it fun pressing those “little buttons” not even knowing it was a musical instrument. The chromatic buttons are a totally new experience for me. So I was brave enough to play part of a song that’s at the end of this video. The Genos is still my main instrument. I wanted something more portable to take outside my house that doesn’t need to be plugged into an electrical outlet. Since I first learned the piano, I had to learn the base chords on the Genos. Now, I’m learning the bass chords on the Hohner Bravo lll, 72 Bass Piano Accordion.
Lyrics to “O Christmas Tree”
O Christmas tree, o Christmas tree
How lovely are thy branches
O Christmas tree, o Christmas tree
How lovely are thy branches
Your boughs so green in summertime
Stay bravely green in wintertime
O tannenbaum, o Christmas tree
How lovely are thy branches
Let us all remember
In our gift giving and our merriment
With our family and friends and loved ones
The real and true meaning of Christmas
The birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ
O tannenbaum, o tannenbaum
How lovely are, are thy branches
O tannenbaum, o tannenbaum
How lovely are, how lovely are thy branches
The pillars all please faithfully
Our trust in God unchangedly
O tannenbaum, o tannenbaum
How love, lovely are thy branches
On Comet, on Cupid, on Donder and Blitzen
Ha ha ha ha

Hohner is one of the best sounding accordions! My father and some other family members play accordion, so I grew up with it. I hope you have a lot of fun playing this new instrument Elaine!🎹🎶👍

LOYAL WARRIOR cool! I can’t wait until I’m better at it. I got the right hand going much better with the accordion, and still learning the bass chords. I’m finding it challenging. But I have plenty of time to learn it. The sound is awesome!

Nice accordion Elaine. 72 bass is a nice size for learning on. The left hand or bass side of the instrument is called the Stradella Bass system, as it was invented in the town of Stradella in Italy, although most Italian accordions are now made in Castelfidaro. I hope you have many happy hours playing it.

Hi, I followed you over here from Steve and Shannon Anderson's channel where you comment. Great unboxing...and nice demo song, well done. My sister used to take accordion lessons when we were growing up. My brother was into drums and I played the clarinet. You have just earned another subscriber.😊 Looking forward to watching more of your videos as time permits. Enjoy your new instrument. Blessings! 😎👌

Cool Rev. Elaine you got an Accordion.....I play the Accordion, I'm a little rusty on it thats why I have not done any videos playing it, my rustiness comes from being without one for so many years, I just bought one in August, a Belltuna ....can't wait til you do a video playing yours..... Lydia

LYDIA on the LOWREY I think you’re the first person to see this LOL!! 😊 I guess I was brave attempting to do part of a song. I got some sore muscles playing it as I never played an instrument that I had to strap on me before. I’m still getting used to the feel of it. Very different from a keyboard and my first time with chromatic keys and playing vertically. But I find it fun to play. I wish you a fabulous week.

Dear Elaine, I am an accordion player although I haven't had one in a while, I have a friend that plays but he had a heart attack and doesn't play anymore. I am looking for a decent buy on a six-row bass like you have. Most of the ones coming out of China now although they sound good -- in fact that Honer is made in China but the final check is done in Germany (They say). It used to be that you could get a 48 button in rows of six which is actually all you need for any music. I used to play 120 bass full-size Excelsior which today new is $15,000. A bit steep for my budget and I need something lighter in weight. But about 15 years ago I got an accordion from a Chines import company with a hard case that was 48 bass and 34 keys on the right. Full size is 37 keys on the left so it is not a big deal with the keys. I paid $950 with a loan from my parents when I was about 12 years old and that was a lot of money -- I was born in 1946 so professional accordions are very expensive. But it got impossible to maintain as the accordion declined in popularity really big after Rock and Roll and the electric guitar became the thing. If you have any questions about the buttons just email me at fgraves525@gmail.com and I will try to explain the layout in an easy way. You have to look at the layout of the six rows.I know it intuitively because I learned so long ago and it was my first instrument but it is not easy to play on the button side. I'm trying to think now without have but I'm pretty sure from memory that the root is the second row, 3=maj 4= min 5 = 7th 6=dim. The first row is called the counter bass and is a third below the root (I think -- it is hard to think without an accordion on my shoulders but my fingers just know where to go and it is wired in the brain so I can't forget until senility sets in I-- what did I just say -- I forgot :) But the accordion on the button side using your 2 and 3 fingers is all you need for most music with 1 being the thumb. As you advance you start using more fingers but you will probably not use the 5th or first finger at all. in fact the thumb is never used. And it takes some muscle development in the hand to reach but an advanced accordionist will be able to use as many as four rapidly. That being said the most important thing to know in the beginning is the button side must be tackled first because you push with the left hand and you need to press some buttons so that it will squeeze. A button releases air. So it is a complex coordination trick. I'm not trying to discourage you but it will take patience as the accordion on the left button side is usually learned very slowly at first at least two buttons are needed to play almost anything. You can use a simple pattern with the 2 - 3 finger easily once you learn it. That is why beginner accordions only have 2 rows. Just remember I'm an old accordion player that does not have an accordion now. Buying a used one is risky and new ones, even small are expensive. I saw UK on the box so I'm wondering where you got it.

Frank Graves I believe mine came from Canada. I bought it on Amazon.com. I’m sure I’ll be emailing you at some point as I’m sure I’ll have questions. Those chromatic buttons are sure different from the keys on the Genos. That’s why I didn’t get the chromatic buttons on both sides. I’d be totally lost LOL!! I didn’t go for larger as that would’ve been way to heavy for me to handle. I wish you a fantastic day (or night, wherever you are.)

Why do I get the feeling that you are going to enjoy the bubble wrap just as much as you are going to enjoy the accordion...! :) When James was little, he would put any pieces he could get on the floor, and then ride his tricycle over them!! LOL! Looked like those straps were giving you some trouble - at least you know that the instrument wouldn't fall out! (Glad you didn't use the scissors on the strap!!) Oh look: more bubbles!!!! :) -- I admit, with all of the buttons on the side, I think I would get totally lost. But, what a workout for your arms! It's like a pump organ and piano shrunk down together... Great job, Elaine, of "O Christmas Tree" (do you know how many versions of the lyrics there are?!?!) - honestly, I thought you would play "Tiny Bubbles" for your first number... :)

Steve and Shannon Anderson the humor is really flying high today LOL!! I love it. Everyone need a sense of humor these days. Yes, I am finding the little buttons a challenge, but the bubblewrap is more of a challenge. It’s not the pop-able kind. It’s like one big air bubble with indents. My bubblewrap fan/subscriber is disappointed. Can’t do a video with those. I’m sure there are many versions of “O Christmas Tree” that I’m not aware of. The accordion was 28 pounds inside the box. Out of the box, it is 18 pounds. I didn’t want to go larger. The 72 Bass is enough for me. I’m glad you enjoy my videos. Thanks for watching and I wish you a fantastic Sunday.

I admit to Googling the lyrics, because I thought you were just teasing with the last line (after the rest talk about Jesus!). -- Well rats. The wrong kind of bubbles?!?! Send it back. Tell them to repack it with the proper kind. -- Wow! 18 pounds is more than enough!!! Wait a sec: you said that's "out of the box"... Is the box the wrapping it came in; or, is it the leather carrying case; or... say it isn't so! It's just like the bohemian who bought a station wagon, took it home, removed all of the wood panelling on the outside... and then decided he liked the car better in the box!!! Say it isn't so, Elaine - say it isn't so!!!! :O [Life would be so bland without humour. :) ] Blessings!

Steve and Shannon Anderson the box with the carrying case and all the cushion stuff in the box added up to 10 pounds. But the product I love most of all is the accordion itself being totally naked, with only the straps attached LOL!!
