Dutch transcript translated, second part in comments: - Eva, nice to meet you - Paul - Welcome to the beautiful botanical garden of Meise. - It’s gorgeous, here isn’t it? - Yes. Shall we walk a little? - Yes, sure. - Are you here for the first time? - Yes. - Really? For a Brusselian? Aren’t you embarrassed? - Yes, a little. - This isn’t very far away, right? - No, but I didn’t know there were greenhouses here. - Alright. - But better late than never. - You alright? - Yes. - Not nervous? - Nee, it’s okay. Do I have to be? - I’m going to ask a few mean questions. - Damn. - No, but you haven’t given interviews for a long time. - That’s true.. It’s been a long time. But… - It’ll be just as quiet as here. - Exactly. It’s very quiet and calm here. Wow, it is really hot here. - Tropical. - Just like in Douala. - Are you okay with the humidity? - Yes, fine. - Let’s sit down here. Do you understand Dutch? - A little. - Okay, we will do the interview in Dutch, then. - Hola! - No, no. Mr. Stromae, we are very glad to have you back. - Thank you. - With new music. You made us wait for almost three years. - Yes, my last concert was three years ago, but I haven’t made music for five years. - But we haven’t forgotten you. - That’s nice. - Défiler, I don’t know.. How was it received in your eyes? - I have the impression that it was pretty well received. - Studio Brussel loves it. It is our Hotshot. We play it very often. - Thank you. - Our listeners are very enthusiastic as well. These are the first reactions, they are in Dutch, though. (Comment from Thijs: The more I listen to this song, the more I actually like this song. What a quirky, talented artist Stromae is) - That’s nice. Thanks Thijs. (Comment from Marie-Charlotte: Listen to the poetry and the irony in his texts. Stromae is a word artist and his music fits perfectly) - Thank you, Marie-Charlotte. - That’s nice, right? - Really nice. - It is not evident, nine minutes. - That’s right. - And the people like it. - That’s nice. Thanks to you too, Studio Brussel. - In the years we haven’t seen you, you have done a lot of things. You have worked with Major Lazer, and made a clip for both Dua Lipa and OrelSan. What did you think of working with those big people? - It was very interesting, but for example with Major Lazer it was very impressive but also hard to work with all those stars. You had Nicki Minaj and PARTYNEXTDOOR, who also sang on the track, and Major Lazor. So many guests, that’s hard. - So many egos. - Yes, to say it politely. We had to approach it correctly. Luckily we make clips with the three of us. [Me] with Luc and Martin. Luckily Martin was there to… he is more direct, I am too diplomatic, and a director has to say it like it is. - What has been the weirdest offer? - Kanye West wanted me to make a clip, but that’s a long time ago already. - And you said: I will take a look in my agenda. - No, I said ‘Yes’, but he hasn’t called back yet. - But maybe in the future…. - Yes. - So, with OrelSan, your friend, he performed at Vorst Nationaal about a month ago. And suddenly, you were on stage as well. How was that for you? - That was fun. Because when I perform, I get stressed because I don’t want to make mistakes with the lyrics. Yes, that really makes me stressed. So there my only lyric was ‘Il fait beau’, so that was just fun. - Maybe in the future, it’ll be better to just make songs with just two words. - That’s a good idea. - Didn’t you miss performing? The crowd went wild when you came on stage. - I miss it a little, because it is part of me. When I do 200 performances in two years, I do it because I enjoy it. But yes, I miss it. And I will, for sure, start performing on stage again. I just don’t know when. - You disappeared from public life for three years. - Yes, that’s right. - Because you needed it. - I was a little… I had some health issues, like what appeared in the press and like I said. I needed some rest, and I needed it anyway after such a tour. - Yes, because we heard you had a burn-out, or were feeling sick because of those malaria pills. Would you like to explain to us how you felt or how it was for you? - I don’t want to go into details, because those only concern me. I just wasn’t feeling well. It was between a burn-out and… What set it on were those Lariam pills, a medicine with very bad side effects. And that’s why I had to take care of myself for a while. - Everyone deserves rest. - For sure. - Do you feel better? Is it entirely in the past, or does it still have some consequences in your life now? - I feel it a little bit sometimes, but that’s part of the experience. And now I know how to cope with such bad situations. - You got something positive out of it. - Surely, yes. - So, I want to let you listen to some Belgian artists. This one, you probably already know. - Absolutely. - The little Roméo Elvis. - He’s good, right? - You like him? - Yes, very much. - Do you know him? - I ran into him once at a comedy show. He was there with his mother and sister. So I met him, that was great. - We call the next artist the queen of Antwerpse hip hop. Coely, I don’t know if you…. - She gave me some music. She raps very well. Yes, and especially with a good English accent. Lots of artists sing in English, but don’t have a good accent. I’m no English speaker, but… - If you hear it, it has to be bad. - The last one, a very different style. - Beautiful. - That’s Tamino. - Ah, they told me about him. - He sings in an Egyptian manner. - Yes, I heard the little … - So, let’s talk about fashion. Mosaert, capsule 5. Could you describe it for those who don’t know it? - Mosaert is primarily a creative label, involved with videoclips, music, photography and fashion. Our fifth collection is out now. We were inspired by African batik combined with English-European dandyism. You find a lot of different influences in there. We used Japanese prints once, and now we worked art nouveau and art deco again. I think that describes it a little. - For sure. Do you get inspiration from your travels? - Not necessarily, but it is funny that it always coincides. I went to Japan with Coralie, and then the Repetto collection with those Japanese influences came out. And now we wanted to come back to where we came from. - Brussels. - Yes. And the collection is unisex? - Yes. - Is that because you wanted to break the shackles of stereotypes in fashion? - I’m a little jealous of women’s clothing… because I like a lot of clothing in the smaller sizes, and they aren’t available in the men’s sizes or they’re way uglier. Men’s shoes are always bigger, so immediately uglier and disproportionate. When I see a nice pair of women’s shoes, or a pair of women’s shorts or top, I want to have that for men as well. - So you don’t need to steal your wife’s clothes and vice versa. - She usually steals my clothes. - Really? You work together with your wife every day. - That’s right. - Dangerous. - But we keep it separate. - So you don’t come home like other couples, like: the colleagues were so difficult? - That’s difficult to say. - So you make clothes and videoclips. You are like a factory. You have so many ideas, and it never stops. - We would like to make an animation movie, that would be something we would love to do. - Like, a full-length movie? - Yes. - Which we could see in the cinema? - With popcorn and your children. It would be nice to make an animation movie. And then also architecture, like, why not? That’d be nice. - Buildings. - Yes, why not? - Okay, I’m curious. So I have a few fashion trends here, on which I want your uninhibited opinion. (Shows picture of fanny pack) - That’s weird. - The fanny pack. - It looks good on him. That’s weird. - But you don’t wear it? - If I had one… I remember I had one in 2009. - So eight years early. - Yes, or eight years late. - Yes, indeed. (Shows a picture of mom jeans) - And what about these, the mom jeans? - Ah yes, that’s been in for a while, right? - Yes, that’s a classic staple item now. - Yes, that’s right. I think I have one. For men, that is. - Daddy pants. - Daddy pants. (shows a picture of tattoos) - Tattoos? - I would like one, but I can’t find anything that’s original enough. - On yourself? - Yes, I would like one, but everything has been done already. - Ah. The last one. (shows picture of ‘man buns’) - - Ah yes, long hair. - The man bun. - The man bun.. Yeah… I’ve got that. I liked it. That’s why I grew out my hair. - Really? In the clip with OrelSan you wear it.. - It’s not done up, or anything. - It’s that long, already, no? - Yes, it’s long. - And how long… - I would like a braid till about here. - Really? When you’re sitting on the toilet it’ll fall in.. - Oh, I forgot about that. - So you have to.. - Hold it. - But you’ll learn that pretty quickly. - So, a little about society. Because your lyrics are always very involved. You talk about how we live, and that that can be quite empty… quiet superficial. I don’t know. - Ah yes, I say that in Défiler. But at the same time, it’s not to criticize. I just analyse. I just say… But we are focused on looks. It may be very up-to-date, maybe it was.. No, I think it is more applicable now because everyone is a star on Instagram. So everyone wants to look good. So, maybe we focus more on looks. Without saying that’s good or bad, it just is like that. - You are not a pessimist? - No, not really. You have to have faith in the new generation. We often hear older people say that the younger ones aren’t doing it right, that they know nothing of the world, while they know the world in which they live really well. A lot better than we think.

- Alright. So here are some current topics on which I would like to have your opinion. I don’t know if you followed it, with Facebook. - Cambridge Analytica had access to the data of 87 million users. But we have always known that. We knew that those data would be used for bizarre goals one day. It is good that it was discovered, but I thought we already saw it coming. The moment I upload my pictures onto the internet, I know that someone will see them and that they’re not mine anymore. So that reaction is a bit contradictory. - I have the impression you’re not a social media fan. - No. I would like to have an Instagram account, but you have to be spontaneous for that and I’m not really good at that. - No? - No, I don’t think so. - But you can pretend like it is. You act like it is spontaneous, but it’s not. That’s the trick. - Yes, maybe so. No, I’m afraid I will put stupid things on there. - Aren’t we looking at screens too much? - I think I’m on my phone too much. Especially the last few weeks, it’s weird. - Because you want to know what… - It has been like that since Défiler was released. So I look at the views, and the comments. - So you do something like that every time? - Yes, yes. - You don’t think: I achieved this already, I don’t care what… Like Kanye West: I do my own thing, and then… - You really think he doesn’t care? - But it does affects you. - Yes, of course. It is interesting to read and then you have to take your distance. - Yes. - Trump, I don’t know.. he.. I worked with an American label for my CD, and those people said that people in the middle of the US are pretty dumb. That’s how they speak of other Americans. - That’s weird. - Yes, I find it really weird that you call your fellow countrymen ‘stupid’. But that really shocked me and I think that Trump was elected due to comments like that. - That insult him? - That insult the others. I think that that creates a gap. I really think that. The worst thing you can do is degrade other people or underestimate them by thinking they’re stupid or something. You should never feel smarter than someone else. - At last, Belgium. - Beats Greece. - The World Cup. We support our ‘Devils’. - Of course. Do you follow the football news? - The international competitions. That’s easy to follow. - Do you just follow it, or is your heart in it? - With my whole heart. I believe in it. - Yes? Nice. - We can win. We believe in it. - Are we going to win? - I said: we can win. - You better say that, that’s good karma. - I don’t play myself, but we support them. We believe in it. They make us dream. - That’s good for Belgium, right? - Exactly. - We will see you soon. - I don’t have a date yet. - That’s alright, I just wanted to say that you will return one day with new music. - For sure. - Yes? - Yes, but I don’t know when. - Okay, now I can let you go. As long as I know that. Your fans will be happy. Thanks for the interview. - You’re welcome.

Ja laat hem maar een animatiefilm en architectuur maken. Dat word vast mooi bezonder en creatief op zijn manier. Ik zou de eerste zijn op zijn première 🤗

He says he doesnt like that there arent available all sizes thats why he did unisex clothes. But clothes from his label only run from XS to XL. Would love to buy some jackets, they look quit amazing. But I guess if you‘re a ,,big guy‘‘ you are unlucky
