This class was absolutely fascinating - thank you to the students for generously allowing themselves to be filmed.

I cannot tell you how moving your statements about the ability of the voice to move are to me. I'm an alto girl and have always hated it. My whole life I've resented the fact that I can't sing higher, it feels like such a limitation. So thank you for giving me hope that I can reach a larger range♥️

You can! The voice is so malleable. No one's range is unlimited, but in my experience we can all learn to sing well throughout a fairly substantial range.

Believe in yourself. I was Mezzo Soprano in 2018 and now I am soprano. I have worked very hard, and still do, and have now been described as very very high soprano and that I sing in the stratosphere. I'm sure you know that it is important not to overstretch. Good luck.

Very interesting video :-) Dear Claudia, could you maybe do a video about voice classification and/or maybe a dedicated video to those voice types that are rare or difficult to destinguish? Have a great day!

I don't know how you would address that in a video! However, I have a new book coming out in October that includes my thoughts on the topic tinyurl.com/y68vwny4 Every voice is unique. Classification simplifies the casting process but it's important to choose repertoire based on the what your instrument does best and what you personally most wish to express. I'm a voice teacher, so my job is to help singers optimize and coordinate the instruments they have, rather than offer opinions on how they compare with one another.

Claudia Friedlander , but it's good for developed voice, and can bad for beginners because their instrument is not developed yet. For example, 2 teachers whom I tried to take lessons with, thought that I'm soprano because of my light high notes and that I can sing C6 and whole light tembre. And didn't mentioned that I have much more powerful low register that I was used to hide to make voice more smooth. And it was more comfortable for me to sing in high tessitura because my medium register was to weak. But it was still uncomfortable for to sing and I felt that my singing is bad and decided to develop from low notes. So now I have low register rich and powerful as contraltos have and I can't mix it with other weak parts, medium just doesn't want to sound. And I have too different timbres, from almost male at bottom to soprano at high notes. And dull weak medium half dark/half light 😆😭 And I still don't know my type of voice. And I'd wish to express different things. More comfortable and inspiring for me dramatic pieces like Re dell'abisso and Acerba volutta but it requires fully developed and smooth voice, and in Re difference of timbres and power I feel especially catastrophic. And also I like some lyric soprano pieces, but there I need to make voice more light and add some extra notes. And I surely can't sing anything where strong mixed register required most and no low notes that can help it to sound somehow.

Why your female students don't use chest voice? It is important for low notes in order the voice to be strong in low register, we all need our low register. Without chest voice, the sounds are very weird. I don't get the modern opera technique, my teacher made me sing the same way. Pop singers use chest voice all the time and they don't hurt their voices because of that. My comment is not supposed to offend you but I am curious to hear what you think. Btw, great opera singers like Maria Callas talked about the importance of chest voice.

This studio class was focusing on coloratura, so I was primarily concerned with helping my students improve their flexibility. I feel that it is very important to focus on one or two things at a time, in both lessons and classes, because if we try to change too many things at once it makes learning much more difficult! Here is a studio class where we focused on vocal registers and talked about chest voice: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hYjIlmdsntiphMk and here is an article that I wrote on the topic that explains my views: www.claudiafriedlander.com/Registration.pdf
