With a good recording and decent headphones, such comparisons are interesting. Of course you shouldn't base your final decision off that, but you can estimate if you own one of those speakers tested, or you can perhaps identify something you definitely wouldn't like.

6yrs ago I went in search of studio monitors & I listened to dozens. A friend had a system in his studio and told me I had to listen to. He demoed the monitors and I was amazed. I also heard deep low end. I heard my first 2.1 system by Blue Sky and I was hooked. The 6.5" satellites have a 100 w amp for the woofer & the tweeter. The 10" sub has a dedicated 200 w amp. XLR's go from the board to the sub, then XLR's go out to each satellites. I cannot hear where the sub stops and the satellites begin. The sound is stunning.I would have never considered a self powered system let alone a 2.1 system, now I'm hooked. Unfortunately the price has gone up a lot on them. I purchased the Sky System One for under $1,000 US. They now retail for about $2,400 US. But this is what your going to hear your music through. You deserve to hear your music clearly, uncolored and precise.

The presenter perpetuates a myth that all speakers labeled 'Monitor' are always better than speakers sold as 'Hi-Fi'. No, not all Hi-Fi speakers are designed to do one thing..."color the sound to sound good'. Many good Hi-Fi models (from companies like B&W, Dynaudio etc) are designed with the same goals of flat frequency response and phase linearity. Furthermore, studio monitors are 'voiced' to sound good too, it's not just Hi-Fi that gets this treatment.

@@akramhosen5116 not really, unless the room is perfectly treated and you're just listening in 1 spot, equally distanced from the speakers which are equally distanced from eachother. That flat response is really just to help translate from system to system when mixing. I like more low and and shiny brights when I'm just listening, and I'm probably not sitting in one place like near-fields are made for. They're also not made to listen to very loudly. When I'm looking for listening speakers I want a good size cone for clarity in the lows and mids. Eq is for the room I'm listening in, which most likely isn't conditioned.

Charles Hammond is right, best way to listen to monitors is with an interface giving you the Left and Right balanced output, and used "balanced' Cable to run to them.

Hifi speakers can definitely sound accurate though not all of them are. Unfortunately the term "hifi" has been butchered over the years into something it was never intended to mean. Originally hifi meant "high fidelity" which literally means accurate or faithful to the source. A couple of decades ago it was studio monitors that (more often than not) were less accurate because they were designed to emphasize portions of midrange and low treble frequencies which gave a more up front sound that allowed the engineer hear what was going on in the mix. These presence peaks were both audible and measurable. It also gave them a fierce and fatiguing sound in long term listening. As a result many studios in Europe preferred hifi speakers because of their accuracy and neutrality. B&W 801s, Quad electrostatics, A/D/S and certain Spendor models (all domestic speakers) were routinely used in recording studios. These days there has been a convergence whereby hifi and professional speakers are sounding more and more alike as a result of studio speakers being vastly improved. Musically accurate examples of both types are now available (low distortion, flat frequency response and wide bandwidth) that satisfy both the audiophile and professional needs. Example: Pro speakers like Westlake come to mind and for audiophile brands... you will not find a more ruler flat, low distortion and accurate transducer than Dunlavy acoustics---an audiophile speaker and one of a handful that can accurately reproduce a square wave.

DJRoksor Actually a lot of audiophiles prize accuracy, detail and neutrality of sound over anything else. In fact I would say more do than don't. Sure there are pieces of equipment and loudspeakers designed to sound a certain way, but most reputable brands (KEF, Revel, YG Acoustics, Magico, TAD etc) design for accuracy and technical prowess. Some however do not and even then it can be design based not something you can expect from the company as a whole.

I used to think my KRK Rokit 5's were good, until my friend lent me his Yamaha HS80m's. Despite all the glowing reviews and low price tag, KRK's Rokit 5's translate to other systems VERY badly. These are DJ monitors, not for Mixing and Mastering music IMO because the sound is about as flat as a mountain.

Andre Black Baby Jesus - You make a good point about knowing your speakers, which is helpful regardless of their flaws and the Yamaha's are by no means perfect but they are much more accurate as an entry level monitor speaker. The Rokit 5's add low end, so I'm confused how this could be practical for a professional seeking to make creative decisions based on what they hear out of the speaker. If one wants more bass as you mentioned, then it should be added by the user,and not the speaker. KRK do some excellent speakers for producing, mixing and mastering, but the Rokit 5's are not one of them..

I love the Yamaha hs7. Very honest monitors for me so far. Maybe a tad more low end than the ultra honest ns10s but still very honest. Ns10s aren't made anymore unfortunately. Not sure why Yamaha discontinued them.

+crizza2000 The Rokit 5 gen 3 have adjustable low end tuning. And it depends on the size of the room/studio in order to get optimum results from whatever size monitor you have. You can't just criticise the Rokit 5

Andre Black Baby Jesus Good points raised...and to repeat what you said, the mids are indeed muddy so unfortunately (regardless of genre) if the mid range is not accurate/clear, then the whole mix will struggle. (Hence the reason monitors such as the avantone mixcubes exist and are so popular, which have virtually a non-existent low end)

Once you know the strengths and weaknesses of the kit you are using - it's possible for a skilled producer to get good results. I'm just a bitter workman who started out on these and wasted countless years trying to figure out why nothing I made on these translated well on other systems. :)

Pretty happy with the M-Audio Bx5 we just picked up. The low end is surprising and they are very accurate. Frequency response sounds pretty flat across the range which is what you want in a monitor, no?

+John Hilman The problem with the M-Audio BX-5 and 8 is reliability and product support. I recall seeing several pair of both models stacked in the junk / salvage parts area of a shop I worked at. I did not take long to discover why. Even as an authorized repair center, we could not obtain parts. Plus they really cheaped out on the PS caps so they will fail.

+John Hilman John, Indeed they take the beating of a teenage son - quite a strong point! Here is the "scoop".. the tweeters are Vifa made, so replacements can be purchased easily and just the driver itself is the part that is replaced. So that's good. The electrolytic power supply capacitors are age related, and a good way to extend their life is to use a truly good surge suppression strip or better yet, a good system power controller. The IC amplifiers (yes, the amps are IC chips) are generic, which is good. But the woofer isn't so easy to replace. So the areas of concern are catastrophic amplifier failure and woofer failure. There are plenty of used parts available to keep them going - which is why we keep EOL units around. I've had customers buy 1 bad one off eBay, bring in all 3 and leave with 2 good working ones and a total investment under the cost of a new pair. They sound good, and they are happy.

Run E I think generally best to look up frequency response chart, try to set your speaker to get it flat. Then, raise the bass 4 to 5 db, possibly more. The bass to midbass is generally to be 1 to 5db higher than flat. And above 1k generally up to 10db below flat. I personally like planar speakers because they react best to equalization without harmonic issues.

Run E The idea here is to hear an unadulterated version of your mix. You can not possibly create your sound to match every speaker but merely to give a pure signal to more adequately sound the best on average. It should be produced for every speaker listened to by everyone. The more expensive speakers will do a better job at this. Your speakers are obviously representing your 2 cents worth.

my gf has been getting into digital music so like 2 years ago I bought her a pair of Rockit 5 like the ones showed here. Wanting to try them out on actual commercial music and feel what they had I just plugged my Iphone in there using a simple RCA Y-jack from the headphone port and found that the quality of the sound coming out of these little babies was sick. I actually ended up buying two more of these just to set them up in my living room... plugged them on the TV and I also use them to play music from my cpu. So basically I'm using them as part of a home theater and as stereo speakers. Am I crazy here or what. Cuz seriously I really don't know anything about studio recording but... seriously a pair of these costs below $400 and I really don't see how I could get a better sound buying regular speakers like Bose for the same price... For you guys out there who know whats up with this gear please let me know cuz right now I'm like.. am I doing something wrong here? Why in the hell isn't everyone doing that. I mean you can tell they're not designed to be used in that context cuz like.. they both use separate electric plugs and you need to turn them on separately and stuff like that.. but once you deal with these little issues you get a damn good deal for your money imo...

Well I believe it's because of two main factors: KRK's are not the most cold and flat monitor speaker you can find, and the other point is - you are listening to commercial material that most probably was mixed by pros who are into industry for a very very long time (like 10 years or so), sure it sounds good. And last but not least, you don't have trained ears so you might just not spot mistakes even though your speakers show them. To sum up: On expensive Bose stereo-system I could listen to my own music and to badly mixed music of other producers and quite enjoy it, as well as I could even go for KZbin rips occasionally and feel fine about it. On monitors I can't listen to anything but top quality commercial music (320 mp3s or better). My music sounds harsh and a lot of music I liked before now sounds just odd, while music by top producers sounds unbelievably good. And, once again, don't expect KRK's to reveal everything (they are one of the cheapest out there, my Yamahas too, but my point stands), this is entry level monitor speakers. If you listen to actual monitor speakers in specially designed room, your experience will be very different.

Bose doesn't really make anything like a 2 way bookshelf speaker anymore. They also weren't the best value for money; mainly they do compact audio these days. Studio monitors can offer great value at the price though.

@@akramhosen5116 I have HS80’s… not sure if you can find them now but I guess the HS8’s are similar. The 80’s are great speakers and are reasonably flat (no pennies involved;) so I guess it depends on your room and what you listen to. They have a nice tight low end but there are probably better options if you listen to mostly bass heavy stuff. You need a good sized room for them to sound their best ;)

@@psycox8758 thanks so much for the reply. My room is decent. problem is, Yamaha markets the HS8s as studio monitors designed for mixing. Reviewers also mostly praise them as studio monitors. But I intend to use them just to listen to music, not mixing. I wonder if HS8s can be used as a HiFi. In the city where I live, studio monitors are easier to find than HiFi speakers are. I need bass, but I don't want my purchase decision to be based on that only.

@@akramhosen5116 Yeah, they’re marketed as studio monitors but remember that the NS10s were originally marketed as hifi speakers ! The HS80s would definitely perform better than the NS10s as hifi speakers though. I actually use them for listening just as much as producing and love the sound of them. If you have a wide range of genres in your library there’s probably nothing better in the price range (studio monitors) for hifi. For more bass heavy stuff you might be better off with a pair of KRK RP8s.

I have a single one as a DJ monitor for my home setup in addition to a full MOTU UL3 + Yamaha HS8 and HS8S setup in the next room. I also abuse the 305 as a living room speaker for background music and I like it, it's relatively flat and the special shape of the waveguide seems to actually work so it's definitely worth it's low price. Keep in mind that it's still a 5"/1" speaker and might me too small for larger rooms. When in doubt, I'd suggest you check out the 308 (8"/1"), the 305's larger brother 😉

SlashButcher All monitors are tested under lab conditions: A flat, dead (dead as in zero reflections) room. The better acoustically treated your mixing room is the closer the monitor in question will live up to it's spec sheet. KRK monitors are used in professional studios all over the world. KRK makes studio headphones and powered monitors. If KRK monitors were "shit" professionals would not be using them. If you are running a Professional studio you don't buy a piece of equipment because of slick advertising. There bottom line is money.

I love the Quad line of studio monitors. I have the 9L and 12L and they are very musical and image very well and just disappear and sound driverless. They don't make these models anymore but are often available used. It's a great British sound.

I've demo'd all of these plus more in a couple different settings (namely GuitarCenter). The Adam's A7x, though a bit more than some mentioned here, are on another level. After using the A7x's for over 6 years now, I don't think I could mix on any of these others. My next monitors, "if" I ever even outgrow the A7x's, would be the Adam S4X-H

Bought my ADAM A8Xs from Kosmic Sound in 2010. Especially awesome when paired with the RME Fireface I got in 2011. Have never felt the need to upgrade. Nearly went the Event Opals, but that would be overkill for my current room. Keep in mind your room dimensions. Also, do remember room treatment such as bass traps!

i just got a monitor speakers with XLR connector and i got a mac what do you recommend in order to use them? should i buy just a adapter cable or mixer,

You would get better audio with less latency using an interface. Look into Focusrite for cheap and well made interfaces. Maybe a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 would be best for you.

i agree! i have used studio monitors for 2 years and my knowledge and ears developed A LOT. but nowadays i mix with generic speakers and just try out different typical setups and my mixes never sounded better.

Using RCF Ayra 8" for a year now for tracking / mixing / "pre-mastering" . Tells the truth. Freq. response is 45 to 20k, 50 watt bass amp, 30 watt for highs. Love them! Don't need the optional "10" sub for my room, but is available.

I have the Yamaha HS50's and I love them. I record in my basement and they are perfect for what I need them for. I can't imagine needing anything more than these 5" monitors. I understand tonality range is different, but they are amazing at the 5" size.

Note that the KRK Rokits 5, 6 and 8 have no kevlar drivers, the VXT series do. The rokits are fitted with woven glass aramid.

Great video, but one thing you forgot to mention is that if you have limited space, it's not enough just to go with a smaller speaker, it's also important to choose a model which has the bassport in the front. Speakers with the bassport in the back needs a lot more distance to the wall behind them. This goes for ordinary hifi speakers as well. The funny thing about the Yamaha monitor which became so popular in a lot of studios is that it became that popular because it had a horrible soundquality. They used it to get an idea about how the music would sound on low end stereo systems.

I am so glad now that I went ahead and Bought the HS 80m. after hearing the reviews from a few different companies I think i got awesome Set of Studio Monitors for what I need. Although I went with the 8's for a 12x12 Room the 5's were just way to small and I was afraid I would not get enough power and sound from them. Wasnt sure and had no one to help me figure it out so i spent the money and got the 8's because if i move to a LARGER ROOM then its a WIN WIN

great video. i have some m1 520 actives. i make dubstep and dance aswell as other styles. i definetly 'hear' the need for a sub monitoring system too. this video pointed out a couple wee things i didnt know before, so will definetly rate. i was also glad i had my triangle thingy covered already, lol thanks!

I use ATC SM50, PMC fac8, PSI A215M and KS digital C5. All are good for what they are inteded to do. The ATC and PSI having a little plus compared to all the other monitors on the market : they are incredibly sturdy in time. More than anything else on the market.

i got the fostex 8inch 240watts per speaker... i am really happy with they have a good frequency range and are more than enough for a home based studio
