As an IT professional and musical composer, I see some glaring omissions. 1) Cloud storage (necessary for protection from fire & theft) 2) File Versioning (necessary for protection from file corruption or mistakes, allows for retrieval of past versions of files) 3) Rotational hard drive backups (allows the user to pick a day of the week to go back to for previous stable file versions) 4) Encryption (Protects against thieves stealing copy-written data. Encryption renders the backup drives useless to thieves) 5) Power conditioning (protects all these backup solutions from having to deal with the sudden loss of voltage or increases in voltage which can damage equipment)

While that is true. This would be the first music production channel I've seen even talking about backups.

Yep. But the cloud will never see anything. Legal issues will arise.

I have a scheduled task set up to copy all my audio files, sessions, and plugins to a drive in another computer every night. Then, on that computer I have backup software that automatically does a hybrid backup and sends the data simultaneously to both another hard drive on a different computer and encrypted to cloud storage. All computers are also protected with auto-voltage regulating UPS units.

Great video! Essential information! Thx! I’d like to add that off site storage is also very important. A fire or flood can bring down your original and 3 backed up copies stored inside one house. I use Dropbox since restoring a session is much better than google (no zipped files). It works great. I also make sure my Dropbox backup is NOT synced. So if I (or someone else) deletes a file online in Dropbox, it does not kill 2 copies of backup with one keystroke. I definitely would not auto sync the folder that your DAW writes to during a session.

Barry... great video!! I've been looking to get more into redundant backup drives. The 14TB sounds like a winner and I'll probably pick one up this week. As an aside... I just discovered your channel yesterday and I'm about 15 videos in. I love your energy, honesty, commitment to the end-user, video quality, and passion for what we do. I don't subscribe to many channels, but I'm definitely going to hit the button. Keep doing what you're doing, my man. You're selflessly providing a great service to the audio community and I, for one, thank you.

Well that’s humbling for sure. Thanks a lot Brandon!

Great topic and advice. I just use a NAS. Problem solved. The best it gets for a hybrid OS environment. You can also set up redundancy + an additional layer if you so choose.

I spent a lot on power management as well to avoid power strikes in florida.high joule rates and conditioned power supplies. Also make sure everything is connected to the power supplies. If you have one single piece of gear connected straight wall the power can funnel throughout the rest of your connected system in a power strike.

One feature which could make windows 10/11 better for music is the onedrive ability to back up your entire working system into the cloud, not ijust the os but all the files.

Thank you for that great video - totally agree! Are you using hubs or docking station for connecting SSDs and/or audio equipment - and if, which ones have you had good experiences with? I‘ve switched to a MacBook and need for ports for controllers, drives, Interface etc.

Hard drive corruption is a freaking nightmare

I'd take that nightmare over a failing SSD any day of the week. The EVO 870 has really dented my faith in the things.

These days, RAID controllers are SO inexpensive, there is no excuse for not using them in a mission-critical setup. Primary storage redundancy is JOB 1. My principle workstation (just OS, software and utilities) runs on a RAID 1 Array, and is FULLY backed up (a bootable full system image) to a removable hard drive 3 times a week. I always perform and ad hoc system image before any major software upgrades - just in case. ALL my data is on a RAID 1 storage appliance which is backed up nightly to storage media, which are rotated every Saturday. I have twice daily Shadow Copies on the data for versioning. Backups are fully logged and I get email confirmations of successful backups and notifications in case of issues or problems. I also backup in real time to an Amazon S3 Cloud Object Storage. All important computing and storage equipment are powered with Smart-UPS's. I have not yet lost one bit of data - and I do not intend to. Nuclear holocausts notwithstanding, I guess....

Get Backblaze and continuously backup
@BarryJohns2 жыл бұрын
An option like that is fine, as long as you don’t have over 10 GB or so. It starts to get very expensive after that. I have over 2 TB of songs that I’ve created over the years. Therefore cloud back up it’s just not cost-effective.
@DerekMarshall2 жыл бұрын
@@BarryJohns it’s unlimited for about $60 per year.
@BarryJohns2 жыл бұрын
@@DerekMarshall I checked their website and it said $5 a month for 10GB.
@DerekMarshall2 жыл бұрын
@@BarryJohns Look at the "personal backup" option ... it's unlimited. I have hundred's of GB's safely backed up in realtime with unlimited versions for 30 days (longer available if you need). This saved me on one session recently where I realized I needed a version from the day before which had been overwritten. I easily downloaded the previous version of my session file and was back in business in < 15 mins. They charge per connected computer. So connect as much storage as you want to that system and it will be backed up. Backblaze also publishes stats about hard drive's which are good to checkout for MTBF (mean time before failure) when choosing your own drives.

Barry, how do you partition internal ssds for a home studio. Yes, back up is a separate thing. External and cloud. But I am launching a new computer with two 4tb internal names and on 2 to internal. How much space for OS, how much for plug-ins. How much for vi libraries, etc. 100gb for OS? The external is another thing.
