For people in Australia wanting to go and talk to someone about their mental health: It is called a mental health plan. It sometimes can take a while to do (40-90 minutes); so I recommend you book for a double appointment. You can usually call or go online, just let the receptionist know that you're wanting to ask for a mental health plan and they will know exactly what you're talking about. When you go in your doctor will ask you a few questions about how you've been feeling and then they will get you to fill out a small questionnaire. The questionnaire is pretty easy; best to not overthink it but don't feel that you have to rush either. The form will tell the doctor how anxious, depressed, and/or stressed you are and will allow your doctor to refer you to a therapist that they think would be most suitable. If you have a preference for a therapist you can ask your doctor about them as well. Most doctors are very understanding in these appointments. I hope this helps anyone who might be feeling anxious about having to book an appointment

it was lovely to hear Rocket being so open about what he had been going through, we tend to be so protective of our mental spaces when they aren't going well and projecting 'positive vibes' when it may not be the case. Sharing with an unbiased person through therapy is important it creates a safe space and we get tools to help reset and rethink with out the feeling we are handing off a heavy weight to a friend or family member. I think everyone one who enjoys your content truely appreciates the hard work you both do and wishes you all the best, you have certainly inspired me to get back creating.

Little cat tutorial for first owners: I had multiple cats that were very well behaved and you can actually teach them tricks if you have the patience. (I taught them come here, sit, jump, go down, and fetch :)) What is essential is to understand how to communicate with them. If you don't want them to do something stare at them. If you want them to come to you give them a blink with both eyes. Never use your hand as a toy for them to play with it is only cute when they are a kitten afterwards it just hurts.
@AM-xt4jj4 жыл бұрын
Petting: cats have their own mind where they like to be pet or not. A good rule of thumb is to greet them before you pet them. So they can anticipate a touch. Sometimes cats will scratch because you scare them by suddenly patting their lower back for example. When petting try not to stroke so fast or hard that you create static it is uncomfortable for the cat. If you pet them too intensly or long they can become oversimulated. If you then do not respect that they no longer want to be pet they might leave or become agitated.
@bulasketches43974 жыл бұрын
All super good advice! Also if you let a cat get away with something once, you have to train them all over again. You can train cats to not use their claws. It takes a long time but just keep up with it. Make sure that you buy a scratching post for them and tell them what good cats they are when they use it. Then discipline them when they use their claws on any furniture or carpet. When they are on you and kneed you with their claws, grab their paws and squeeze it hard (not too much of course). You'll have to keep doing it for a while. My cat never uses his claws on me even when playing. My husband didn't keep up with it so his legs get dug into. Their claws come out when they are excited or happy even, so it's really good to train them not to do this so they are nice when they are on your lap or playing.

To maybe add to that question about taking on hobbies while depressed - As someone who deals with depressive episodes pretty frequently, I've found that the difference between a fulfilling and unfulfilling past time is how much I challenge myself. I feel the most reward - and the most relief from my mental health issues - when I take on something that I haven't done before and have even a bit of success with it. I think that the key to that is recognizing even the small improvements that you make. I'm a full time artist but I've been pursuing the past time of woodworking as something to not make money from or gain recognition for but to help with my mental health. An example of a challenge I would set for myself would be learning how to use a new tool or maybe even just researching a woodworking technique and learning something new. I hope this helps.

There is so much I want to say! Your vlogs are like presents, seriously a ray of sunshine every single time. Your relationship with Rocket is such a wonderful example to your younger viewers (I’m old) on how healthy partnerships should be. You are both so supportive of each other and are each other’s biggest cheerleaders. I was so moved when Rocket opened up about his mental health, not an easy thing to do, but he gave such great advice and being vulnerable to your audience will have helped a lot of people seek out therapy, help and support from their friends and family. Lastly Tonka is absolutely adorable. I love seeing people just fall in love with animals. I have 2 beautiful cats and can’t live without a feline friend. I’ve already followed his insta and don’t be shy about including him in future vlogs. Take care guys x

Just a tip to people who are struggling with a situation similar to the person asking about the hobbies - a symptom of depression is lack of pleasure from things that normally gives you pleasure so it might not be that there's something wrong the specific activities you're doing, it could be a result of the depression.

Ahw I really love the kitten! (I love them alll). Though I really would like to address: adopt, don't shop... buying a cat from a store is wrong on many levels and I'm not even going to explain it all (if you do some research you'll see why). I wanted to say this in the comments because you are such a big influence and a lot of peeps take example of you.
@furrylittlepeach4 жыл бұрын
This store strictly does not buy from puppy farms. They sell/rehome rescue pets and have pets from licensed breeders. But very happy for you to leave this comment here! Ty!!
@Kuromiicat4 жыл бұрын
@furrylittlepeach Buying a cat from a breeder, even if they are licensed, is still shopping and less ethical than adopting a cat from a shelter since thousands of cats already need homes and breeders are just creating more of them that people will buy because they’re “prettier”, meaning less get adopted and potentially end up getting euthanized. Did you check where your kitten came from?

The “adopt, don’t shop” message is very important and, as a long time volunteer for animal rescue groups, I’m glad to see someone bringing it up. I also want to say that I hope no one will guilt trip Shaan, since it seems she wasn’t aware of the full extent of what goes on with most of these pet stores. Not to mention that she just happened to see Tonka and fell in love, which is a wonderful thing for her and him. I’m glad he has a loving home now. And maybe Shaan’s newfound love for him will inspire her to advocate for the other fur babies in the shelters :)

Rocket is right. I also have mental health issues to the point that my body almost shutdown. But I learned it to use to my advantage. I still get panic attacks but I have understood its purpose. "Past time can turn into a hobby" - the key here is that you just do not do things just because or for this or that. You do positive things because you can and you deserve good things along the way. You are not obliged or locked into the negative aspects of this kind of sickness.

we have a similar therapy referral system in estonia, it's great! thanks so much rocket for opening up to us, i have a history of depression as well and know the struggle to find activities to enjoy doing. i think the pastime vs hobby thing could be more of a passive vs active issue - it's easier when you're depressed to do passive things like watching tv and listening to music but that isn't really enough to feel fulfilled, it's important to also have a hobby where you're actively creating something or doing a physical activity, or something where you have goals to work towards etc.

A lil note on therapy in the US. It's definitely harder to get mental health help here in the US but for those out there, know that it is okay to not be okay. There's still a huge negative connotation that comes with going to therapy where people judge you for it when they shouldn't. It took me a long time to admit I needed to go see someone. I didn't tell anyone I was going to a college counselor as well as a therapist. Both took me several weeks before I even grew vaguely comfortable being in the environment. It's hard opening up and admitting how you feel. There's such a huge push for people to be machines that are constantly moving forward and producing work. You owe no one an explanation for going to therapy or counseling or any sort of mental health help. The first step is admitting to yourself that you need help, and that you want it as well. You're strong for just admitting that, and even stronger for going through with it. Don't be ashamed to tell your doctor you want to see a therapist, or to join group help. You got this, and never forget there's strength inside you. More people have depression and anxiety than you know. I hope you have a lovely day, and thanks for the vlog Sha'an, it made my day!

About our mental health - I find what I eat reeeally affects my mind. Thank you Rocket, for sharing your experience. It is darkest before the dawn. You are so talented and also, a very gifted draw-er yourself, Rocket...I can just imagine you drawing some pics of Mr. Tonka (love your name for him). Wise sages of the ancient world said cats change our lives for the better. Great video from you both.

The more pictures of Tonka on Instagram the merrier! I have a cat, she’s been with us for a year and I miss her being a kitty so, all the pics of the little nugget will light up my Instagram feed.

How you managed to get your loved ones to agree for you to get Tonka is beyond me. Maybe you could do a Skillshare class on the powers of your persuasion. 😅 Thank you to Rocket for opening up and sharing something so personal.

Oh my goodness, Tonka is SO CUTE. I mean, kittens are all cute, but like yours is extra cute. I just got a kitten too, and he’s currently snoozing on my chest as I watch - cheers to cute kitten babies! Aaaaaaaand, I love what you do and how you show it to the world and you’ve changed my life and you’re the best :D

Thank you Rocket, we love you! Ok, I’m scrolling through the comments & I’m sad. These last 3+ years have been harder than normal & many times surreal. Then you add quarantine, the aggression over wearing a mask, the need to protest racism & inequality, the pressures of the next election, it’s overwhelming. I wish the US took mental & physical healthcare seriously & didn’t treat it like a privilege, instead of a right. Also, I can’t wait to see the secret project & congratulations on Tonka.

I'm so happy the resource was available to us when Rocket needed it, and will be if I ever need it. We are very fortunate. I hope that mental health becomes a priority in legislation everywhere.

Something good for cats is a scratch post/box for their nails and so that they don't scratch your sofa instead!
