The tracking shot from the Children of Men will always be my favorite scene as it shows how important the baby is. It was so important that soldiers, terrorist and other people from the apartment stopped and treat the baby as a miracle, which it is to their world.

The "Boogie Nights" opening shot, one continuous take over 9 minutes, going from exterior crane to interior Steadicam, introduces all the main characters, their personalities and their attitudes, the time period and location the film takes place in, and the music.. while also managing to get the title of the film in the frame as well. To me, it's one of the best of all time. #PTA

I'm a huge fan of the tracking shot when it's utilized well and serves the story even though I'm not a filmmaker but have seen a lot of movies and shows and know when it's most impactful, but am learning so much from watching the behind the scenes of movies/tv shows on the special features of Blu-rays, DVD's and this channel and other filmmaking channels on how they pull them off and am always am impressed, I would love to take up cinematography but don't know where to start and it's a very complex subject.

This is one of those tecniques that fascinates me. Because tracking shots are basically the perfect movement to sequence shots, like Cuaron does. I am a firm believer of Paul Thomas Anderson style and his tracking shots are iconic. I have problems knowing how to call a lateral track so now i know how to. Although the dolly shots still confuse me (a dolly is always a tracking shot? Or i have to specify when is a tracking shot?) Also, love so much the complexity it adds to staging and blocking. It adds a lot to dynamism.

a camera on a dolly doesn't make it a tracking shot, but following a subject forward or backward is called a dolly

Great video, have loved tracking shots since forever! From a spectator's pov I think there's certain qualities involved to make a tracking shot become great. It's important to know that tracking shots alone don't necessarily make a good scene since more often than not those shots do also happen to be one of the most choreographed and excessive scenes in a movie. You can make a film like Russian Ark which is basically people walking and talking and it will always be somewhat interesting as a concept but also feel gimmicky and trivial like watching a stage play. One quality is the risk-taking involved. The pure insanity of a scene so complex there are so many things that could go wrong and yet they still pulled it off. Hundreds of actors, animals, close-ups or huge set explosions that can't be repeated and all that timing involved. Atonement beach scene is a perfect example for this, or Victoria. Another one is kinetics. This one works best for action movies. When chaos breaks loose and you're sucked into the immersion by that steady focus on the pov character while it's a highly dynamic fight scene that's also perfectly choreographed and pleasing to watch. This is the Adventures of Tintin scene, the Sucker Punch robot fight, that Battle of the Bastards shot, the Hobbit barrel scene amongst many others. Can also work just with the camera moving such as in Panic room break-in scene. Third one is storytelling, what is achieved by this scene? Is it just an appealing action/establishment scene or does it also advance the story narratively, atmospherically, emotionally? You already brought the examples Touch of Evil and Children of Men. Most examples that I can think of meet at least one of the criteria and that's why they are great scenes rather than just camera tricks shots. You have to go all in on that scene and be prepared to have it become the most challenging take of your entire project. But if done right it will also be one of the things people will love and remember most about it.
