I went to a niece's graduation in Durham Cathedral. Peter Ustinov was the chancellor and spoke at length at the start of the proceedings. Although in a wheelchair and frail (he died a few weeks later and this may have been his last public appearance) he was hilarious. Graduations can be tedious. Ustinov turned it into an experience to be cherished. I'm not sure what the university authorities thought. Ustinov ensured that the day's timetable was wrecked, his wit unleashed in all directions, and at length. Love him.

"This is literally the who’s who of Hollywood back in the days." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- As far as star-studded celebrities are concerned, you are correct. 1974's Murder On The Orient Express also had a "who's who of Hollywood". But all films have more elements than just actors playing roles. There's production design, costumes, music, direction, script and many other elements that bind together to make movies enjoyable ... not just actors and acting. I find it annoying when people see nothing more in a movie than actors.

This version is so much better than the current remake. Not because it follows the author's book more closely but because it has humor and panache that Branaugh isn't interested in. Sections of this version were shot in Egypt ( a fact that Bette Davis complained bitterly as she was used to shooting most of her great films in Burbank) which the new version omits and uses DGI. Ustinov may not be the ideal Poirot but he is leagues closer to it than Branaugh.

@@zaiaraujo Branagh gives the impression he's just fulfilling a childhood dream to be Poirot at all costs - he's directing the movies and casting himself as Poirot. Angela Lansbury is the down-to-earth logical JB Fletcher while in Death on the Nile she is the loose flamboyant alocholic writer...she portrays both opposite roles well! Her drunken scenes remind me of Mrs Slocom of the British comedy, Are You Being Served?...hilarious.

Yes, the new version also has a cast of known actresses/actors, but the cast in the old version was of another level, and it really shows. With a large cast it is always difficult to give everyone a chance to find their place on the stage, but when you have people like Lansbury, Niven, Farrow... that isn't a problem. I absolutely adore Mia Farrow in this one, she gives Jacky so much personality, she steals every scene she is in with that face showing all those conflicting emotions... amazing. And though I really like Emma Mackey who plays Jacky in the new version, she is completely miscast. I also do not like what Branagh did with Poirot, I did not like it in Oriënt Express and I like it even less in Nile. Branagh wants to create a Poirot for the modern audiences, because he believes modern audiences will not like Agatha's Poirot, and that is so insulting. The scene with the snake is a beautiful example: Ustinov's Poirot is startled, but uses his little grey cells and solves the problem without becoming something he is not, Branagh's Poirot probably would have solved the problem himself without help and becoming super-Poirot. I love Suchet in the role, I love Ustinov in the role, and I did not mind Finney either, they stayed true to the character, but Branagh... It is like they would do a reboot of Columbo and take away his grey raincoat, his car, his references to his wife, and put in a few action-scenes in every episode. Some things do not need a modern makeover, I have no problem with bringing the books of Agatha Christie to the big and small screen, but I have a problem with over-adapting them for modern audiences. Downton Abbey worked perfectly for many seasons, the first seasons of The Crown worked perfectly, and so many other shows set in early 20th century work perfectly without a need to 'modernise' them, so why not give the same courtesy to Agatha's works set in these times. But the problem is that a lot of the modern audiences do not know the books, do not know the series with Suchet, do not know the movies with Ustinov, and those audiences do not compare; they are impressed by the cast of the movie and the modern take on it. Sherlock Holmes has been modernized in Elementary, Sherlock and Sherlock Holmes and both series and movies did very well, but though I liked some of the stories (the creators of the series also wisely decided to set the shows in a modern era), I never saw these modern Sherlocks as Sherlock Holmes, just as detectives who happen to have the same name as the character of Doyle. I think the Robert Downey-movies (set in the era of the books) inspired Branagh for his Poirot-movies, but where the Robert Downey-movies obviously were a bit of parody, Branagh still wanted to stay true to the original stories, and you just cannot have it both ways.

In my ideal world, Angela Lansbury won her Oscar for Best Supporting Actress this year and, although I'm glad for Maggie Smith winning for California Suite that year, I'd have her winning for Gosford Park.

Agreed. But besides the supporting Oscar for "Gosford Park", Maggie deserves another one for "The V.I.P.s". In my world, Maggie and Margaret Rutherford tied for best supporting actress of 1963.

I haven't seen this since I was a kid. I remember loving this movie. After watching these clips though, I didn't remember how comical and silly it was. Don't get me wrong, still miles better than the newest one. It was Branagh's Murder on the Orient Express that really upset me. One of my favorite stories, and the film looked amazing, but the script was terrible. Kenneth is a great actor, but totally wrong for Poirot.

We need this one released, I will buy it day one. The newest one was trash. The people, the music, the sets, and everything just clicked together. I would agree with others that, all things being equal the only other version of this is the tv film but this will always be the gold standard by which others are judged.

Please not to permit Branagh to remake Agatha Chriestie's great works of Poirot series. I think he even doesn't know how the movies should be made. This version of Peter Ustinov's Poirot is undoubtedly the best of all.

Peter Ustinov and David Niven were best friends back in the British Army during WWII. Because Niven (an officer) and Ustinov (a private) were not allowed to fraternize according to the rules of the day, Ustinov became Niven's batman (a personal assistant).
