I keep telling people Dancehall has been around a long time in Jamaica since the 50s, long before its independence in 1962. Coxsone has been in forefront since the start, so rightly gets the kudos as the greatest producer Jamaica ever had. 🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲🇯🇲

I'm so ashamed that I've been producing music with a DAW called studio one and didn't know Jamaica is where the real studio one was born.

Calypso (🇬🇷Καλυψώ) meaning “to cover” or “to conceal” is a style of music developed in Trinidad 🇹🇹 using West African “kaiso” and “canboulay” (burnt cane). A form of peaceful protest music where singers comment in smart about political and social issues. Often sung ex-tempo (freestyle) it became popular with tourists and locals. Tourists don’t know the double-meaning or phrases like “me donkey want water” or “longshot kick de bucket”. When USA R&B jazz became less popular and the 🇺🇸 States became more focussed on Rock ‘n’ Roll, Jamaicans needed their own recorded music and so a new industry began. While they were focussed on mento, ska, rocksteady and reggae, the tourists at the hotel were most comfortable with Trinidadian Calypso, fulfilling the West Indian stereotype, even though most tourists have no idea what the music means or where it comes from. Most still don’t. Sorry for the long message, but some people need to know and it needed to be said!
