Without any waterproofing underneath the shower pan, water could be absorbed into the Pirma base and then through capillary action down into the pan and directly onto the wood. Water would basically be trapped there with the membrane on top of the shower pan locking it in. So waterproofing the walls seems critical. I’m sure studpack is following the directions, but from the looks of it it seems like it could use a second coat.

I can attest how great Triton’s customer service guys are. A few months back, I spent weeks looking for their water proofing sheets and membrane. They provided a list of distributors in the Dallas, Texas area, none of them were willing to do anything for me. I called Triton again and got to talked to a local sales guy by the name of Pete Ybanez, he tried to locate some products for me for 1 bathroom. Days later, he called me and gave me an address to a very large distributor in Fort Worth to pick up some samples. It was one full roll of Triton membrane and a shower kit, for free, $300 worth. Thanks again Pete. Hope you are doing great.

To keep stuff from splattering on the floor, you can go to somewhere like Samsclub and they have these really thin sheets of cardboad that they put on top of pallets under products like paper towels. If you happen to get there when the cardboard is still there, grab some. I had an employee practically beg me to take some because they just throw it away. You can then lay that stuff on the floors to protect them and it doesn't cost you anything. I used a sheet to protect my floor when preparing to install my toilet. Can Triton membrane be used behind direct-to-stud shower walls? "It wasn't fma it was fml" LOL. I love that you repurposed things in that kitchen for the skylight. I'm a big fan of recycling things/re-using them for some purpose.

tinting your primer is a great help but you definitely want to do it a contrasting color. it's awesome over white drywall too. (because its super easy to lose white paint over white primer over white drywall mud). I like to use a really light pink. it's easy enough to cover (even with white) but it really stands out where you got primer (so you have good coverage) and where you now have paint. It's esp great on ceilings because we'll all looked up at a ceiling long after it's painted and realized that there is a whole area that is just primer. When ti's pink that doesn't happen. Any paint shop will tint your primer no problem.

I know time isn't on your side, but i'd apply a few more thin coats of the membrane just to get it a few mils thick and have peace of mind. At least enough coats until the bucket is done. By the time you're done with your next coat, you could be starting another one right after that. The coats dry quick when they're applied thin, and they build up and bond on top of each other creating a very strong seamless membrane.

My only gripe with Durhams is the short working time. It would be so nice to mix up a batch and have an hour to apply it, but you only get 15 minutes max before it starts to stiffen up, which means I spend as nearly as much time mixing/cleaning every 15 minutes as I do applying it. I have tried adding the splash of vinegar to lengthen the working time multiple times, as per the instructions, but it never made any difference at all as far as I could tell. :(
