You want to study in Germany? Then you definetely need to know whats the difference between a university and a university of applied science ( Fachhochschule) and thats exactly, what we are going to speak about in this video.
Study in Germany video text:
The universities of applied sciences really emerged in the 1970s, even there were already similiar institutions before. In the beginning, the focus was definetely “just” on teaching. Litereally, there was no research. In 1976 there was the so called Hochschulrahmengesetz, which highered the status of the Fachhoschulen and put them on a smiliar level as the universites. Within that, application-oriented research took a part in the Fachhoschulen. At that time, after you finished your studies on a University of applied science you received an academic degree, so called diplom but behind the diplom was written in brackets (fh) for Fachhoschule
In the year 2000 and the year after, the europe wide bologna process started. Within that, all europe countries tried to “standardize” the study, title and certificates to make it easier to compare graduates and within that to also make it easier for people to move within europe, as their academic degree was valued official the same. Within that, also the fachhoschule and the university were official the same and the process was and is always: Bachelor- master- promotion/PHD. So as we saw now, by law Fachhochschulen and universities are the same. But is there still a difference in reality?
On a university, you can normally only study if you made your “allgemeine Hochschulreife” which is the “Highest degree” in germany that you can get after leaving school- or if you come from another city- if your degree equals to that. On a university of applied sciences, you can also study with so called “Fachabitur” or when you dont have Abitur (a levels), but you made your “meister” in apprenticeship. Without diving to deep into that it means, that university of applied science is open for “more” people. There are some studys, that you only find in universities. For example if you want to be a doctor, a lawyer or a teacher, you need to go to university and the choice is easy made. Also things like philosophy, physics, biology, chemistry and maths you normally study on university.
On universities of applied, you can normally not do a Promotion- this right is still only for universities, even some states think about to change that. So if you want to get an PHD, you gotto go to a university. But, you can still for example do your bachelor in a fachhoschule, than your master in a university and then your phd there or even your master on a fachhoschule and then change for a phd to th university. Even though is recommendable to go to a university directly if you already know that you want this- i will explain you later why.
Both, in universities and Fachhoschulen normally all the professors have a PHD. But if you want to be a professor on a fachhoschule, you need to have atleast 5 years of working experience and from that 5 years, 3 years of work experience in the real worlds “free economy”, not in the university. On a univrsity, you can be a professor- and ye there are quite a few- who never worked outside the university.
The possibility to do your PHD and the fact that professor on university of applied science need to have works experience underlines the 5th point- the practical orientation vs research. This, as it was historical, is still somehow true. On Fachhochschulen, you often have in your bachelors a mandatory intern of 3-6 months included, while this is not nescessary in your bachelor on a university. Yes there are some universty where interns are also nescessary on some field of study, but in the university of applied science, thats always the case.
Coming together with this you often ahve much bigger groups in universties (like 600+ in your first semester in economics), while in university of applied science you are often in groups of 30-100. The size of the master course are in both - university and university of applied science often way smaller than in bachelors, so the big difference is in the bachelor. Als in universities of appllied science its sometime a little bit more like school- more fixed schedules and “less freedom” to choose within your studies. Sometimes its even mandatory to attend the classs- not in every but in some,- while in unversity that is also less common the case.
