Hey Harnoor, I passed out class 12th in 2020, and am interested in doing a degree in Computer Science so took a year drop for Jee but things are not going well. It would be very helpful if you made a video explaining things like 1) How to do the research for a college?(I am trying but I couldn't figure out all things properly) 2) How to calculate our GPA? 2) How to avail for scholarships 3) Can we get scholarships in our Masters? 4)Which exams should we give? 5)What is an Honors College? 5) Should we first sit for the exams and then do the research? (Cause for people like us coming from Lower Middle Class families paying application fees of $60 matters a lot and fees for exams like IELTS, SAT, etc.) And other points that you feel. Please🙏🙏🙏 see if you can do it cause its so much pressure and I don't even know who else to ask😭😭

First, your assessment that you've "heard", ETH is one of the best CS universities in Europe is very inaccurate and does a disservice to your viewers. The ETH Zurich is one of the best universities IN THE WORLD, and the best university in ALL of continental Europe. No other continantal European university even comes close AND tuition is almost free, while in the US it is 30 - 60'000 per year. You don't seem to know these things, or you don't recognize what a different level of opportunity this could be for your viewers, which I find very surprising and a bit disturbing, considering you are "advising people". Your salary and job opportunities discussion is extremely one-sided, strangely biased and inaccurate. One example: You cite the high salary in Zurich vs the high salaries in the US, then finish this discussion by settling on: "yes but the costs of living in Zurich are very high...", implying that therefore earning the salary in the US is much better, because you keep more of the salary due to implied lower costs of living. Nothing could be further from the truth and you choosing to turn a bliind eye to the COMPLETE picture is very odd and almost seems ill-informed. First and foremost, if you include the tuition discussion from above, you are already looking ata net gain in Switzerland vs the US program at a reputable university there. In addition, do you really think that the places in the US where such high salaries are paid leave you much spendable income at the end of the year? Take Silicon Valley, San Fran, Southern Californai, Washington, Portland, Seattle, Boston, New York, Chicago, etc. If you believe your "high salary" there does not have comparetively high costs of living as well, you are dreaming. In addition, income taxes in some states in the US can be north of 35%, whereas in Switzerland, your tax situation will usually be much more favorable. Also, I think you are overemphasizing the bureaucracy in Switzerland vs the US for getting a job. In my experience, no bureaucracy in the WORLD is as monsterous and inflexible as the American version, ESPECIALLY when it comes to work visas and the like. Yes, it is easier for an EU member to get a job in Switzerland than a citizen from another region of the world, but the REAL issue is the language and your language skills. Oddly enough, both of you don't seem to understand this hugely important aspect. I'm assuming that you feel because you speak english, and in Canada and the US they speak english, and you can work at the ETH in English, you've covered all the lingual bases with just English. If you want to stay in Europe, this is wrong. If you do not speak German, French or Italian, but want a job in Switzerland, THAT is the major pitfall. It is definitely NOT the bureaucracy. For someone who takes the opportunity to learn one of the major European languages during their well paid and prestigious education at the ETH in the same rooms where Albert Einstein studied and WANTS to continue the Swiss life-style, it is actually very easy to get hired into a well paying job there. However, since most people from Pakistan and India already speak English and want to persue the ingrained dream to ultimately get to the US, it is far easier to get a job in North America without having to learn another language, which is also very understandable.
@kumarmohit5655
@kumarmohit5655 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the detailed analysis. I do not know to whom it was referred to but if you have gone through the entire video till the end, I am sure I have included all the important points that you mentioned (like No fees etc) except maybe the lower tax case in Switzerland which now you already explained quite nicely in this comment :). The fact that knowing one of the European language can get you a job in Switzerland is a myth. So it will be very inaccurate to mention any such point. Knowing a local language is an added benefit no doubt but I know none of my colleagues from India who know German but nevertheless are still working in Zurich. Getting a job in swiss requires effort at a different level and has nothing to do with language unless you are looking for consultancy/service jobs and not jobs in technical field which you will expect after a degree from ETH to say. So I might repeat if getting a job here is your priority after your masters and you come from Non EU nation, it is far better to choose Canada or US otherwise ETH is the best university to pursue your education, as good as Stanford/MIT.
@christheswiss390
@christheswiss390 3 жыл бұрын
@@kumarmohit5655 I never said you "did not mention the almost zero Uni fees in Switzerland", because you did. Perhaps if you read my post a bit more carefull, you might notice this "slight inconsistancy" in your "argumentation". You also mentioned the "high" tuition fees in the US in the second half of the video, but you completely failed to contrast the two directly against each other, even though this makes a HUGE impact on where the better opportunity would lie and thus help your viewers make a much more informed decision. This was because, as I pointed out, you were completely ignorant of the fact that the ETH or the EPFL are so prestigious at a world scale. I'm curious: have you ever even BEEN inside one of the 8 best universities of the world? If only as a formal visitor? Which one? When? You wrote: "The fact that knowing one of the European languages can get you a job in Switzerland is a myth." I never said knowing one of the major languages in SWITZERLAND CAN GET YOU A JOB in Switzerland. Your efforts on twisting the arument points to your having no real argument to stand on. Try to just stick to what was really written and argued. I DID say that not speaking one of the major languages of Switzerland! (not Europe) is a major PITFALL, as opposed to perceived Swiss "buraucracy". Knowing one of the Swiss languages is one of THE most essential skills aside from the actual subject matter of the job that is required (except if you are tasked with low-level tasks or locked away in a labratory whith little social interaction), since you are competing in the job market with people that have your identical eductional skills AND speak one or even multiple Swiss languages. I'm assuming most viewers will understand that, to be a highly valuable asset to a company (and thus earn a high salary), an employee should ideally be able to communicate with its local stakeholders and customers in their own language. Hence why I argue the US and the UK are far easier employment markets for people from your country. BTW: the comment about the high level of Swiss "bureaucracy" coming from someone from your country is outright comical in nature. Seriously! 😂 Perhaps you're oblivious to the fact that your country is the global laughing stock for depicting medievel, commenwealth bureaucracy to the point of it being ridiculous, inhumane and the bureaucratic equivalent to torture? 😂😂 And I'll even spare you the discussion of the infamous "incoming goods" ports where your government "holds" imported goods until the necessary financial "lubricant" has been widely dispersed to the local "government representatives". So when you pretend to discuss the Swiss "bureaucracy", one again has to wonder how much knowledge you really have in this subject in your country - or anywhere for that matter. 😩

@christheswiss390
@christheswiss390 3 жыл бұрын
@@yashpardeshi1 I hope you do as well, as you seem to be looking for information sources and trying to inform yourself. This shows dedication and smarts - just what the ETH wants from its students! 🤞 Please be aware that, contrary to most "private" and thus "high-fee" universities in the anglo-saxon world, where outrageous semester fees replace tough competition once you have been "accepted" into the university, the ETH education is so sought after that in many faculties, the student body is often wittled down to 40% (or less) of its original starting class after 4 semesters (i.e. the ETH math and physics department both show those kinds of class reduction rates). The ETH (being 90% tax-funded and thus not private cash-flow dependent) REMAINS extremely competitive throughout the Bachelor program (the exclusive ETH math and physics sweat-shirt handed to those that passed the 2021 second-year finals proudly and succinctly reads: "I'm a survivor"), so once you've passed the entry exam, make sure to keep up the competitive momentum. However, the sense of achievement that comes with knowing you've overcome the hurdles and made it to the degree is life-changing, and the prestige that comes with that well known achievement lasts a lifetime. Good luck to you! 🤞 🤞

@@christheswiss390 Thanks bro. Yup! Ready for the competition there. It's been my dream university since 1 and a half year. And am sure that with hard work and persistence will be able to proudly say "I am the survivor". Actually I am already kind of a survivor . 20% of German learners successfully pass C1-C2. Then 30-40%(15 for Asian as someone whose dad was in Prüfungskommission said) of those, the entrance exam. So for us ,the struggle is already high

Locals speak German and you would need to have full command on the German language to be able to even qualify to apply for any bachelors program here. For masters it is not needed. After masters for job hunt not knowing German might affect your applications yes but there are English speaking jobs too(not as many)

I think he forgot to mention that German language is must if you're looking for work there

No Steven. Its not a must but yes a skill the employers do seek in the candidates. There are many MNCs and even the local startup companies with many foreigners employed. I would say it is not a difficult thing to find english speaking jobs here.

@@kumarmohit5655 Not everyone gets into Google man. If you move to other cantons then even french is required and work permit is another ball game. Non EU folks are least preferred here unless it's an company transfer

@@stevenayare6097 So from what I know, companies do not even hire people if there is such a language restriction. But if they are willing to give you a job then the chances are the work permit will be accepted (provided the employment criteria related to salary etc per canton is satisfied.). I know no one whose work permit was rejected having a job offer in Switzerland as of now and also they only speak english. I would be pleased to know of anyone otherwise.
