Illuminatilogy I’m the exact opposite lol. Heading into my third year of college and I’m a Physics Major and Math Minor. I find math so much more enjoyable and rewarding than other subjects. Physics is especially rewarding since often times the problem you’re working isn’t fully setup for you like in math. You’re given the foundations of the situation, to which you apply your knowledge of physics to construct your path to the answer, and use your knowledge of math to follow that path. Other subjects (chemistry especially) typically setup the entire problem for you and you then use a single equation to solve. I’m a rare breed of human: physicist. Happy studying!

Talking to a duck would get us smarter? That's why I love this channel.
@artesiningart49617 жыл бұрын
not just to a duck but maybe to anything or anyone , maybe 'cause this can help you recall ideas and process those ideas into a kind of storytelling or talking as if you're explaining your solution to a problem or telling about what codes you used, which in turn will help you figure process one by one those solutions and codes to finally figure out where the error is. This is especially used with problems or tests that require solutions and problem solving instead of recalling terms. It can also be applied in writing essays. I usually do it with math, though I don't always get the answer all right, at least I understood some and figured out answers especially to those I got stuck with. I use it all the time with essays and it works for me and got me winning some essay writing contests in school and having perfect ratings in essays for history classes. :) It's like you're teaching someone else, explaining to someone else, or explaining the solutions (for formula-based problems like math) and the words used, the content, context, and organization of ideas (for word-based problems like essays) to another entity.

I use his tips in my study schedules and don't just sit around watching his videos to fool myself. I used to fool myself. Now I don't. You can change too. What helped me the most was the Pomodoro Technique and realising it all comes down to habits.

@Guilfordust7 жыл бұрын
Also I’m worried that you only worry about the chemical symbol for Neon is more than you care about anything non Anki-able
@Thomasfrank7 жыл бұрын
Miles Guilford you do realize that citing one study as an example is not the same thing as drawing a conclusion from a single study, right? Context-dependent memory is well established in psychology; using one vivid example is a good way at introducing it in a 9-minute video where it's a single tip.
@Guilfordust7 жыл бұрын
Apologies this was a little terse, I wrote it when hanry. It's TED-esque style over substance that I was protesting, "using one vivid example" is at best formulaic. What was the sample size? What was the effect size? Was it reproducible? Are there other explanations for the result? Were there (or have there consequently been) sufficiently many controls to isolate which variables were truly explanatory? The G&B result is not a good one to cite for dozens of reasons; perhaps there's a tension between wanting to teach good study skills (incl. citing good sources responsibly) and conveying them in a memorable way - my view was that that example is far too much of the latter than the former. If you use scientific findings to try to lend legitimacy to your argument, it's wise to use robust results. My concern is that hiding behind psuedoscience and potentially spreading pop science misinformation (see the Kahneman priming stuff recently ... he took the criticism seriously) may cause more harm than good for CrashCourse in the long run.

Wish I had the benefit of these videos when I was in school. No one ever taught us *how* to study so many of us got it wrong! My method, right up to degree level, was to progressively write out all my notes in smaller and smaller forms until I could fit it all onto 1 sheet of paper. And usually no more than about 2 days before the exam. It's quite amazing that I actually passed!

So glad I didnt have to put in that much effort xD In college we got a weekly list of material to be covered and home work tasks, which had to be done partly ahead of the class, and some afterwards. Doing the work ahead of time, paying attention in class (being active, taking notes, paying attention, practice, etc) and then finishing up the homework... It meant that I could: 3 days to go - Read through all material (mostly text books) 2 days to go - focus on gaps in knowledge and scanning through assignments 1 day to go - focus on the difficult section and remaining gaps testing day - not study at all, just rest and be calm and collected for the test :) Common sense was my best buddy during test, and I hardly failed any of them :D

I've also seen a trick where you chew gum or suck on breath mints or hard candy while you study and chew that same gum or suck on the same breath mints/hard candy when you take the test. Also, if you're doing a timed multiple choice math exam, just plug all the given answer choices into the equation to see if they work. This is most effective with algebra, but it can work for other math too.

We had no limits on size of the index card, but it had to be an index card & I think we could only write on the lined side... needless to say I bought the largest sized index cards I could find lol 😂 it was my interpersonal communication course, & having that “cheat card” was an absolute life saver!! I wish more professors would allow this tool, even if only for a fraction of the allotted time given for completing the exam!!
